It wasn't raining that much in the morning so I managed to do an hour of shovelling clay from the mountain to the mound (that will eventually become a sloping bed for sun lovers).

I met the layer of the horrible yellow sub- clay that we dug up from the pond site and bagged it to be taken away. It's incredible how different the layers of the soil are, the top 1m is lovely black clay improved over the years and underneath there is this yellow thing that feels like cutting my spade into a giant firm slug

A few more hours of arranging the soil and mixing in sand and compost and it should be ready for planting. Botanical tulips are waiting in their bags and I'll move the Echinops from their temporary home there too.

Then it was the Dr Jekyll/ Mrs Hyde time to scrape and wash the mud off my person, slip into a going-out gear and meet friends in town.

Halfway through the meal I noticed the state of my nails and decided to use knife and fork on my sandwitches

I managed a few minutes outside planting out the bare-root hostas that came in the post yesterday. They are in a temporary position as I'm not risking climbing down the slope to where I really want to put them. Then I dealt with the rainwater that's been collecting in various containers all over the top of the back garden.

Two hours in the garden this morning but now rain this afternoon. I hoped to complete the meadow job tomorrow but once again life gets in the way. Not the weather this time but a neighbour and a police officer visiting me this afternoon. The neighbour was burgled last night and as we spent a lot of money having the best domestic CCTV installed it's my home which gets involved. Tomorrow morning I'll now have to contact the CCTV company requesting they please confirm a registration plate number; I don't understand how to zoom in to just a plate number. The car actually parked right outside the house being burgled so it's highly likely a stolen car or a car with false plates; Nothing and no one is safe these days.

Neighbours won't get their hand in their pocket to have CCTV installed but are more than happy to use mine. Such is life.

Just one last push will sort the meadow out but I'm prevented by bad weather or interruptions.
