A very good morning one and all. We have had snow and severe frost here during the night. I have now got the seasonal 'look' I wanted over Christmas but now I just want it to go away. Round 2 of the flat tyre story today but luckily I have had a great tyre business recommended to me by two of my friends so hopefully will get a bit further to being sorted. The picture today is not quite true as I need to think about taking down my decs. I just have to get the 'thinking about' and 'doing' coordinated.

Good morning to you all! Good plan @Ladybird4

The start of the New Year hasn't gone too well so far, with my lovely friend from Montpellier spraining his ankle and an afternoon spent in A & E - terrible place to be over the New Year period. It made me smile though, as the last subject has been about balance. Speaking of which, my Swiss ball lessons have stood me in good stead, re balance.

So - he is here for the week and enjoying being pampered. X-rays of ankle to sit through today.

It is cold here too. Unusually cold and I sympathise with you up there, I hope everyone's heating system is working.

I wish all those working or leaving home this morning, a safe return.

Good morning @Tui34, I cannot think of anything more soul destroying than having to sit for hours in A&E at any time. I feel so sorry for the staff who often have to put up with all sorts of bad temper from people waiting to be seen, when they have to assess who's needs are the greatest. I have had to wait in A&E - only once - but as I enjoy people watching I wasn't too unhappy. The height of interest on my wait was a prisoner escorted by two policemen, who needed to be seen and exited quickly. Hope your lovely friend enjoys the pampering. I'm sure that he will. :blue thumb:

Good morning @Ladybird and @Tui34. Hope your car gets mended quickly Ladybird and your friend is in not too much pain Tui. Lucky for him it happened whilst he was staying with you.

We have had a very light scattering of snow overnight so OH has been out spreading the rock salt on our paths, particularly the one to the bird feeders which has a couple of slanted paving slabs down from the drive. I came a spectacular cropper there one year and was only saved by clutching at the feeder pole!

It's beautifully sunny out there but I'm not venturing out yet - the road still looks lethal.

We watched the Night Manager last night but I must confess I got very confused. No change there then.

Have a good day all and keep safe. Hope @AuntyRach got to work safely.

Hello everyone! I hope you are all keeping warm! It's a long time since we had such cold night temperatures down here -4c last night.
I think I am feeding the countries sparrow population! I think I read somewhere that they are quite scarce in the UK?
We have a leak in our hot water tank which is gradually getting worse, the plumber came a few weeks ago and said he would send a quote - yeah right! Plumbers here are terrible to get hold of, he said it may last until the new year, well here we are and we can't get hold of him.
I finished my three months of physio for my torn shoulder tendon, he said not to think about getting my other hip done until this year, but said hip is now giving way and so painful I shall have to get it done!
                Stay safe and warm.

                  Good afternoon ladies & gentlemen,

                  Thank-you for your kind words and very wise advice about both my Mother and my neighbour @AuntyRach , @Ergates , @lizzie27 , @Ladybird4 , @Busy-Lizzie , @AnniD , @Liriodendron , @Penny_Forthem , Your kind words are greatly appreciated folks.

My neighbour has carers coming in four times a day, but they only seem to stay for about 15 minutes each time. Her Daughter works in the village shop (which is very, very close), but she never seems to call in with her. They don't seem to get on well unfortunately. This is a great pity because it would probably be much better if she could move in with her Daughter, but it doesn't seem that this will happen.

She (my neighbour) rang me last night just after midnight and them again at around 4am. Each time I hastily threw on clothes and went to her and showed her round every room in her house and of course they were all empty. The time just after midnight she told me that her Mother was coming soon to buy her a new coat for school (my neighbour is in her eighties). I feel very sorry for her, as I think what started out as confusion a couple of years ago is becoming something worse.
It is just a few short years ago that she (my neighbour) was driving to the swimming pool every day (in a town 10km from here) and going swimming with a group of other ladies. Afterwards they would go for coffee together and they would also book holidays together. Now all that has been taken from her.

I might, as you quite rightly point out @Busy-Lizzie , be remembering the lady who was a retired miniature horse breeder from the erstwhile GW forum.

Glad to hear @PatE is still OK. My very best wishes to @Dovefromabove and her family and please do tell her (if you happen to see her @Busy-Lizzie ) that she is missed and has most certainly not been forgotten about. Very much hope @Goldenlily26 is OK too.

I'm hoping you will be able to access the dog coats soon @Penny_Forthem .

I very much hope that all will go well for you today at work @AuntyRach .

Sorry to hear of your travails with the flat tire @Ladybird4 . It was particularly unpleasant that it happened during a spell of such very cold weather.

Hope you internet access troubles are now behind you @Busy-Lizzie .

Best wishes for you friend's x-ray results @Tui34 and a speedy recovery to him.

Hopefully you will be able to get the leaky hot water tank fixed soon @floralies . With luck the plumber will come again soon.

Best wishes to all as always

                    Afternoon folks.

I did my few hours in work! Early days though as it’s one thing sitting in office but another doing patient care. The car was really frosty with a dusting of snow this morning! The non-sun-facing areas on paths and verges are still frosted now.

I wonder if you can speak to your neighbour’s daughter, or carers, @Badly_Maintained as it sounds like the lady is potentially not safe at home, plus being ‘on call’ isn’t fair or sustainable for you (kind though you are). They may not realise about the extent of her confusion as it can be subtle or not noticed particularly in daylight hours (quite typical in dementia as symptoms and anxiety are often worse at night). If the confusion is now suddenly worse, she may be unwell with an infection etc too.

I hope Monday is ok for everyone - take care if you have to go out in the cold.

Wise words, @AuntyRach. Your neighbour certainly needs checking out. Both an infection, and dehydration, can frequently cause symptoms like that in older people, and both are treatable. I saw this with my mother in law, and also patients I was called out to examine for possible dental problems.
Very icy here today, lovely in the sun, but still treacherous in the shade. DIL has been back for a second MRI for her slipped disc. Hoping for some positive feedback. All a worry.

I agree with @AuntyRach, I think you really need to speak to her daughter at the very least @Badly_Maintained, and letting the carers know would be a good idea. It sounds very much like dementia (based on personal experience), but infection could be a factor.

Your kindness does you great credit, and I don't wish to sound harsh, but the poor lady isn't your responsibility. Keep an eye out is one thing, but phone calls in the middle of the night are another.

I would tend to agree with posters comments @Badly_Maintained and I speak from experience too. My elderly mother, 104 yrs old, has dementia and during the past few years this has deteriorated badly so if your neighbour is the same, it can be very dangerous and not safe for her to be on her own. My mother stopped locking her doors at night and began wandering around the house in the middle of the night, Heartbreaking to see but that is the nature of the beast. She is now in a Residential Home and is getting worse by the day.

I agree too @Badly_Maintained , I have experience of someone being very confused like that. Once they start thinking their long gone parents are still around it's a classic sign. She may not show this to her daughter. It's very kind of you to help but again not your responsibility, talk to the carers if the daughter doesn't want to know.

Unfortunately, @Badly_Maintained, while you're acting as an 'voluntary carer', her daughter may be happy to live with the status quo. I'd also be careful not to put yourself in a position where you may be accused by the confused elderly lady in question, of doing something you haven't done. @AnniD is right.
I've filled in the econsult and asked for an appointment with the doc. Go me!
I've put the family off coming for their supper tonight. They live on top of a very steep hill, which can be very dicey in frost and snow. The kids have had snow days and son has worked from home. DiL had to brave the snow to get to her school, which was open.
                              More snow forecast tonight.

Good afternoon all. Hardly any snow here, but a hard frost again so I waited until after lunch to trot to the shop for some milk etc.

Absolutely agree about your neighbour, @Badly_Maintained - you are a saint, but it sounds as if she needs medical attention and probably long-term care. You have your own mother to care for, as well as yourself!

Glad to hear you survived your first spell back at work, @AuntyRach - baby steps, I think.

                                How's the tyre, @Ladybird4 ?
