Many thanks @shiney, I will upload more pictures as it hopefully gets new growth. For now, here's a pic that shows how the branches hang. IMG_4377.jpg
Maybe it's a willow, not a corkscrew willow?

I think that the first picture is promising. Even before seeing it, I was going to suggest giving it more time. Some plants are a bit slower. For instance, while most of my deciduous trees are in the process of growing leaves, my hazel is still snoozing - and I know that this is normal. The signs of life are very small, but they're there.

Thank you @Spruce - I've just looked up Weeping Ash and it does look very similar!

I uploaded the photos to Gemini (Google's AI engine) and it suggested that it is a weeping ash tree, it just wasn't completely sure about the variant from the photos. Of course AI isn't always right, but it's another nudge in that direction.

I would not be suprised if gemini found this thread, read the comments, then told you that it was a weeping ash as per a members suggestion...
I have seen it do this with reddit threads before!

I think it's never a good idea to take what they say as definitely correct.. They are often a useful starting point, but then you need to confirm the information because their sources might be unreliable, as you have pointed out! On this occasion, there was a detailed explanation around the growth habit and foliage.

(Having said that, I have found Gemini to be far more reliable than ChatGPT. I consider the latter to be a waste of time, not even worth using as a starting point.)

Indeed, AI just reads text world-wide entered quicker than we do and puts the pieces together. If 10 people are wrong,AI claims the wrong is right.
I would give it more time. Most of the trees around me are not ready. My crap apple and lilac tree have leaves, but they are the only ones.

I never believe AI when it gives answers to my searches and I just ignore it.

The grey stems and black buds, together with the new leaves looking dissected suggest ash to me.

From the new picture I agree that the stems and bud do look like an ash. Looking at the old picture again where I thought it had lobed leaves, I believe that might be your neighbours tree. I took the green to be one tree and not two and I could only see leaf detail on one half.
