Hi Ziggy ... I know I'm not Sussexgardener ... but it looks like a Datura to me with a seed pod .... or are you being rude .... :hehe:

Ziggy - that has to be a Datura with both a flower and a seed pod - most surprising.

As the seeds are poisonous (to birds?) it may not have even been dropped by one of them.

 I am very probably wrong, but I always thought the Thornapple was in fact Datura stramonium.. Other names are Stramonium. Datura. Devil's Apple. Jamestown-weed. Jimson-weed. Stinkweed. Devil's Trumpet. Apple of Peru.

 Do you know anyone else near you growing one Ziggy..?? Or where did your seed come from.. In CA
Thorn apples are often found on dried up river beds and stockyards and compete strongly with summer crops..!!

Hi Victoria, not being rude, thornapple is just one of many local names for datura, as Marley has just pointed out :)

None growing locally, nearest one i've seen was in Sherbourne, Dorset. It may have come in with the horse poo, from a stable in Devon, but its rooted so close to the tomato that i was suspicious that the tomato seeds were contaminated.

Had a mate that smoked some once, said it left him lying in a heap for 4 hours, not knowing who he was. Best not put it in the salad then:usr:

Very impressive (I thought I'd best respond, seeing as the thread was addressed to me!).

Lol, we need threads to be hijacked, it keeps the interest up.

Then we need odd things pasted into them.

Ah, good old Solanaceae. The only plant family you poison enthusiasts will ever need.

Must have been a brave man who first dared to eat spuds and toms.

I often lie in heap, not knowing who I am. No hallucinogens necessary.
