Hi to all members, this is my first post.
I have a pampas grass which had beautiful plumes until the local sparrows decided that they needed to rip them apart for their nests. At first I found it amusing until I realised that soon I will have no plumes left. Is there anything I can do to stop the birds destroying the plant?

    Dont worry about it Kev,
Your lucky to still have any plumes left now anyway. By rights its best to cut the whole plant down as low as you can in early spring to allow the new growth through and tidy up the plant.

De nada Kev! at least the wind didn't trash the spikes through the winter , Mr & Mrs Sparrow have cosy bedding & your Pampas is preparing to send up a whole load of new plumes this summer. If I were you,I'd hack it right back to tidy it up & encourage new growth.
Wear protective clothing,or you'll be cut to ribbons!

Thanks for the replies. I'm not much of a gardener and I didn't know about cutting the pampas grass right back. Could I still do it at this time of year? Do I pull the plume stalks out and cut the green stuff back? Sorry if the questions are dumb - it's my first pampas grass!

Just cut it back as low as you can its almost impossible to kill, although it is a bit late I must admit.
