Hello everyone :thumb:, Got a problem in my garden at the moment with vine weevil's, I planted cabbages and cauli's under cloches about a fortnight ago and they have been badly damaged by them, I ordered a pack of nematodes on thursday' So hopefully that stops them a bit, I have been going in the garden when it's dark and picking the fckrs of, My main concern is the other plants that are on the patio and in the greenhouse like toms and potatoes :help:
I have spoken to a few old gardeners that i know from round my way and all of them said they have never even heard of them, One of the gardeners said don't worry about it son a garden has loads of bugs in there they will go away when the plants get a bit older:heehee:' Ok thanks mate, Does anyone have any ideas how to get rid of these and how worried should i be :cry3:,

    Cheers TG.

Not wishing to be too picky, but I have never heard of Vine weevils attacking Brassicas before. Hope this is not a new trend. A picture of the offenders might help to properly id them and help with a treatment.

    Morning TG
I am assuming when you say your Cauls and Cabbage are being damaged by Vine Weevil you mean tha adult is nibbling the leaf edges rather than the weevil grub eating the roots ?? The nematodes I think will only work on the weevil grubs not adults .But you are right to collect the adults if you have the time and patience ..The soil born grubs will be starting to change now to adults , and then the egg laying cycle will start again with new grubs hatching around Mid August this is a good time to apply 'Provardo' as a soil drench to your pots etc.
I have a lots of fuchsias and greenhouse plants which are ease targets if left uncontrolled ..I do pick off a few adults in the spring (they tend to be out at night )

Thanks for the replies:thumbsup:, Yes that's right davygfuchsia the adults are nibbling the leaf edges and leaving semi circles of damage all over the poor things:cry3:, They are deffo vine weevils, they play dead when you go near them which makes it a bit easier to collect them and i have had a look on the internet and it's them allright, I will get some pics of the damage and the weevils tonight if it is not too muddy in the garden,

    Thanks again TG.

Well that is certainly not a Vine Weevil. Not sure which one it is, but most likely to be one of the nasties which feed on Brassicas. Flea beetle is the most likely.

Thanks for the link capney , That's them :cry3:, What do you reccomend i do to stop the weevils doing any other damage in my garden or keeping it to a minimum, I have ordered nemasys vine weevil killer but that only kills the grubs apparently, I don't want to use any pesticide on the garden unless it was a last resort,

    Thanks again TG.

There is no amateur available insecticide which will kill the adult Vine weevil. I have had them swimming in pure bleach for hours with no effect.

Provado vine weevil killer, apply as a drench using a watering can. I do however, have a nagging feeling that it can't be used on edible crops:( On the plus side it does the job so you shouldn't have any more probs afterwards so may be an option if you can move the brassicas.
