.... who makes 'flower pots' from newspaper?

I was surprised to see a 'how to do it' slot, during one of the programmes from Chelsea and, I notice, (for £7.99 :rolleyespink:) there's a wooden gadget for doing exactly the same thing in the Betterware catalogue which plopped through my door t'other day.

But .... I've always made my own, in fact, with the rain hissing down and nothing needing my attention in the greenhouse, I've spent the afternoon turning yesterday's supplements into just over 100 'pots' ready to prick out my various seedlings into. I use the inside of a loo roll, or a lemonade bottle or indeed anything which is round and of the right size - certainly nothing which costs nearly 8 quid.

Rather than buying say 3" pots at what? £2-odd for 5? I just assumed everyone did it. Surely, I'm not the only one?

I think Capney has a video of it on his website.

Don't they get soggy and break apart? It's one of the reasons I don't like using peat pots..

That was a really useful video and I will stow that info under my belt for future use, thanks Capney.

I have a surplus of all sizes of plastic pots from my local Gardening Club, from my relatives, and friends so at the moment I wouldn't need to use paper pots but it is one of those oh so useful tricks that I probably will use in the future. I'm pretty good at making paper aeroplanes though:D:heehee:

I've never had to buy a plastic pot, they just seem to turn up in my garden as if by magic.

Great, if you get any over 12 inches send them my way will you.:D

The price of decent plastic pots seems extortionate these days

Not if you handle them carefully.

The thing I particularly like is, that by using something the size of a cardboard loo roll tube for example, to wrap the paper around, you get 21 paper pots to fit neatly into a standard seed tray (thus saving loads of space over conventional 3" pots) and you only have to pick up one or two to look for roots peeping out of the bottom - by the time they're in need of handling to any degree, the root ball is such that the whole thing is pretty much self-supporting.

Going off on a slight tangent; sorry guys, but I was lucky enough to come across someone selling 1-3lt pots at a car boot sale recently; 50p for 20!!!, needless to say I bought what they had (about 100 I think). Our local farm shop sells their old pots 10 for £1 too.....:thumb:

Back on track though; I will be making paper pots and using loo roles for most of my veg next year
