A great idea for pots :dbgrtmb:

If you have similar trouble with labels in the flower beds then you can use paddlestones. These a large smooth, fairly flat stones that you can use a waterproof marker pen on. I bought a 20kg bag for £7.50 in my local garden centre but if you live near a pebble beach or a stony river you can get them a lot cheaper. :heehee:
Slate paddlestones are a lot more expensive but broken roof slates work well and can be bought from some builders merchants.

I think I read a gardening book once  :loll: - I'm too busy gardening.

Ziggy, does the 'badger' instruction come from the same book as 'slapping round the head with a wet fish' and 'before bending down in the flower bed, make sure there isn't a short cane in the ground behind you'?

It's just that you are not allowed to type the word 'cr@p' or other censorable words. :heehee:

Totally impossible to pick the best piece of knowledge - knowing why your compost is a stinking, slimy, mess doesn't help you understand why your tomatoes have got blossom end rot - so every bit of knowlege is priceless.

As for labels - I've finally solved my own little problem there. I buy the longer plastic labels, print out plant names on my cheapie 'entry level' Dymo machine, then stick the 'dymo'ed' (?) strip to the plastic label, making a couple of holes through both sticky strip and plastic label with a hot needle and securing with a bit of fine wire. For larger plants, two plastic labels can be fused together with a bit of heat, when the 'sticky stuff' on the Dymo label gives up, the wire keeps it in place and the embossing on the label means it's always legible.

This is where someone says - 'OK, fine - but why don't you just ......' :loll:

The best info/tip I have had off GC is all the information on best compost types ( many many threads on this ! ) And one from PeterS on the different fertiliser and the NPK makeup. These two sorted a lot of confused fuddle out in my head :love30:
Another good tip was in the lawn section. When returfing always remember green side up !:D

Reminds me of an old Joke ......I have PC'd it , by adding "ethnic streotype" :sunny:

An ethnic streotype buys a chainsaw, two weeks later he takes it back to the shop and tells the shop assistant, "when I bought this, you said it would cut down 50 trees an hour!, I've only managed two trees an hour!" The assistant says "let me see" and starts it up.
        BRRRRRRRRRbbbbbbrrrrrrbbbbbbrrrrrr!!

The ethnic streotype jumps back in surprise and says

        "what's that frickin' noise?!"
