Hi I have moved in to a new house and know little about gardening, Over the back of my garden the is a 4 feet tall fence and it does not offer much in the way of security, its not my boundry and I would like to add a hedge of some kind to stop people wanting to climb over the fence, I thought about conifers but they don't put people from wanting to jump through them, I am wanting a hedge that I can grow up to 6 feet tall and keep quite thin, maybe up to 2 feet thin, I know it will take time to grow, any suggestions what I can plant ?

I also need to plant some hedges down the side of my garden, its not a security problem but I wan privacy from my next doors, the fence is yet again 4 feet tall but I want a good 6 feet hedge to grow so what can I plant for that side?

    regards Keith

Hi Keith I would respectfully suggest a wildlife hedge(Hawthorn ect) grows quickly and no one will get through it or over it,the only drawback would be in keeping it 24 inches in width ,you would have to cut it back on a regular basis, and if you purchased bare root ,they would,nt cost you much, hope this is of some help to you my friend.:)

      I agree with Dai.
Berberis will even keep bullocks out - and it looks good.

Hi all , i like the idea of .. Pyracanthus as they come in 2 colours .. i think, red and orange Berries !! , and you could alternate them and would make a very pretty hedge and grows quite fast, also the wild birds such as Blackbirds, Thrushes etc love the berries and are an important source of food through out the Winter for them ..
