That's an interesting question. I suspect you'll struggle to find an accurate answer. You could try looking up CACI's ACORN code system (CACI is a big list broker, their ACORN system stands for A Classification Of Residential Neighbourhoods). They've basically profiled us all based on our spending habits. Another similar profiling system used to be MOSAIC, but it used to be less popular.

I used to work in marketing support (IT geared towards marketing - if you received some targeted junk mail about 10 years ago, there's a good chance I had a hand in it:) ), and we used ACORN to advise our clients which of their clients they should target certain products at. Its a long time since I worked in that area, so things might have changed since then. I don't know if there is anything free to view from either, but it would be worth having a look.

I don't know percentages, but take a look at this - from May this year - http://www.rocketmarketinggroup.com/2009/05/27/britons-spending-time-saving/

I'm sure within the last week or so, I heard either from the media (or my middle daughter, who's a retail analyist) that the 'average family' spends about £8 per week on their garden. If that is the case, then all I can say is - judging by the amount I've spent on my garden - either some people aren't pulling their weight .... or I'm 'above' average!

I suppose it depends what you mean by "do gardening". I suspect the majority of people grow something, even if it's just a pot of herbs. Does that count?

Its often said that gardening is the nation's most popular hobby by a long way, but I don't know whether the one-hanging-basket-in-summer type 'gardener' counts or not.

My neighbour to one side grows a fantastic crop of bindweed, much to my annoyance as it tries to invade my side.

A friend of mine grows dandelions and dock in his lawn.

it will be very difficult to give a true percentage of people, who do gardening as a hobby in britain. i can only go by the number of garden centres and
nurseries ,that have grown up over the years ,around our area.
gardening is now big money. over the past 40 years ,gardening has completely changed. years ago my dad and our neighbours, would grow, potatoes, carrots, leeks, tomatoes, cabbages, sprouts, lettuce etc.
now we want to spend more time in the garden (of minimum maintenance).
dont get me wrong ,we have got more creative, with (pergolas)(pagodas)(,arches ),(gazebos ),just to mention a few,(a trampoline) which i nearly broke my neck on!!! playing with the grand kids!!. but i do believe now we take
more pride in our gardens. i remember gardens of yesteryear they would have a nice lawn at the front, and at the back it was mostly veg,and that was where they spent most of there days gardening.there were no barbecues/patios/patio heaters etc etc. we have came a long way over the last 40 years!.oh i forgot water features! i have just put one in my own garden .its 3 dolphins spouting water into a large sea shell !!. music.:gnthb:
