:wub2: Oh yes jack, totally agree!

There's nothing romantic about downloads. Putting an arm and cartridge with a stylus onto a record player is romance in itself, add that a winters night and a crackling real fire and its hard to beat as a way to listen to music.

I'll carry on living in the past, much nicer.......

Not very helpful is it ...

I sowed mine [edit: using a heated propagator on 31-March last year and they were massive. Early sowing will give you huge plants before its frost-free safe to plant them out. "Patience grasshopper" on this one :)

I'm tempted to sow them straight [individually] into 1L pots this year, last year they went into 9cm pots (about 0.5L) and were only in them for a short while and the roots were itching to get out ...

Worth noting that seeds are hardier than plants.. that's why plants have got through major global ice ages. Ricinus seeds will still sprout if started now, but they will take longer to germinate. Some tropical seeds can be frozen and still sprouted. Nature is a wonderful thing! However... in this game, you kind of just want to sow and grow.. if you wait too long, you forget where things are!

Good point Stephen. Just to clarify: mine were sown indoors last year, grown on in pots, and then planted out after last frost.

I prefer the traditional way too, especially as we buy our seeds so I will be doing the same as you this year but if the seeds were free (from the flowering the previous year) I guess experimentation could be done.
