Hiya, new member and first time poster. The garden has brambles all over the place, coming down from trees, appearing from bushes etc. How do I get rid of them without digging them out? Is there any spray I can buy to kill them off? I worked hard in Spring time at cutting them out or back and they've just reappeared with a vengeance Thanks
Hi, welcome to GC To quote a member, one man's brambles are another man's blackberries. I am in the blackberries camp-I do love them. If you are happy with herbicides then use roundup in early summer when they are throwing their new stems around, otherwise keep cutting them back, over time they will die off. They are little swines I know.
Thanks Lollipop :thumb: It's like Day of the Triffids only with brambles it seems. Pesky blighters. I did spot a few blackberries in the garden earlier, but they just tasted of nothing I had best get out there with my secateurs then :thmb:
You're most welcome. Blackberries with greek yogurt and a drizzle of honey, I've ate all mine but just thinking about it makes my mouth water. Horses for courses.
Hello Greenfingers and welcome to the Forum. Don't despair about your brambles - they're not the worst weed in the world and I find they give in quite easily. I just cut them back right to ground level and spray the new growth with weedkiller. Brambles gone. You might have to do it more than once but they do give in. Try to cut them down before the blackies eat the fruit. A bramble that's been through a blackie grows very easily. Good luck.
I always find that digging them out is the best way to control and get rid of brambles. I know that it seems to be a pain, but time spent digging them out especially when they are within a bush will be better than trying to use chemical means. A round-up type chemical, could potentially kill the shrub as well as the bramble. They aren't the worst weed in the world, and once they have been dug out, they shouldn't come back. Brambles do have the tendency to put out long shoots, and when those long shoots touch the ground a new plant can develop, which does seem sometimes that you are fighting a loosing battle, but persevere, and you should win in the end! Hope this Helps!
