Most gardeners I guess, like to try plants which are new to them but sometimes these plants need treating differently from those around them. I'm learning that not all perennials are cut down at the same time, for example, but when your hands are muddy it isn't always practical to turn the pages of a book (even less so to start tapping away on your keyboard!), so I've taken to using the larger plant labels and writing my own brief 'notes' on the back - e.g. 'slit trench in autumn'; 'don't cut til Spring' or 'don't prune hard til 2011'

Because the larger plant labels are often something like £2.50 or more for 10, I make my own from shampoo bottles, shower gel containers, etc., which can all be rinsed out, are easily cut with scissors, can be any size you like (allowing ample room to write however much you need to on the back) but best of all, they come for free.

The best ideas are always those that make use of things that are free. Well done, fidgetsmum.

I do similar, but use home made markers to remind me where the allium bulbs are planted, saving me from digging into them by accident.

I stick 'em in the ground - mainly because I have been known to 'prune off' the bit of plant with the label on it! - and, making your own means they can be any length you like, so less danger of blowing away. Although I use a permanent marker, a pencil can be just as good.
