About six weeks ago I bought two Hebe's to go in a new flowerbed I was making. They are Hebe Sapphire, and Hebe Purple Pixie and have been beautiful but going over now.

I'd like to keep them much the same next year, not so much in size (although I don't want them to get too big), as well clothed in leaves and flowers. As in the past my Hebe's have grown leggy and woody, I was wondering if I needed to cut them back, also how much and should I do it in this first year.

I have much the same problem with a couple of brooms I have in my front garden, although they are not really big they are starting to go woody half way down the stems, I'm afraid to give them a good pruning, as I seem to remember someone saying, that if you cut into the old wood it will kill them.
