I think it was @Kristen (where are you Kristen) who said that multiracialism can work but multiculturalism doesn't!! The Australian Prime Minister has said to foreigners who arrive there "Fit in or get out" perhaps this is one of the problems?
A loose example of the point I am making is President Obama, he is not only black but it is rumoured that he is also a muslim, no one really knows his faith no one really cares, he 'fits in' and that is what matters!!

All the more reason in my book to make every effort possible to get to them before they get that far.
If, by your reasoning, once a minor (in a similar ISIS scenario) has taken that step to leave home, we should simply wash our hands of them and let them get on with it, what message does that send out (not simply to these 3 young girls but perhaps any youngsters who face that same dilemma?). That this country simply does not care about them, their welfare or their place within *our* society? So, perhaps left believing it is all the more reason for them to join ISIS who entice them by appearing to offer them something more.
And the consequences of that? More youngsters leave here to add to ISIS numbers; ISIS grow bigger, stronger and then become an even greater threat to the world?
The more youngsters they can entice from here, the greater *their* intelligence becomes about us, our ways, our vulnerabilities therefore increasing their potential to cause as much damage as possible.

Surely the whole point is that THEY don't think they fit or WANT to fit into our society. They want to live under Sharia which I hope is something we will never give them. So they have left. So be it.

That's an unfortunate typo given the subject matter Yvonne :heehee:

On the plus side Jihadi John has been named. Let's hope that they can track him down now and take him out.

Being young, disaffected, impressionable and silly is one thing, becoming a murderous savage is an entirely different matter.

I'm sure that at one point poor old jihadi john was young, dissaffected, impressionable and silly.

And look what he grew up to be.

Oh come on @"M" do kids really worry that the country they live in cares about them or not or their place within society?

Dont think that crosses the "average" kids mind, only those that maybe on the slippery slope in the first place.

I think teenagers do indeed consider their place within the society they live in. Teenagers have "rebelled" again societal constraints on them since "teenagers" were invented. They have to have considered it to be able to rebel against it. Or, at least be around peers who have.
I wasn't speaking about the "average" young mind - the context was in relation to those who, like the girls who have fled to Syria, may be contemplating doing the same: leaving home and joining IS. Their young minds are fertile and it only takes someone to plant the seed of the idea that the country they currently live in won't care if they run off/have no place in a Western society. I don't believe they have to be on any "slippery slope" - they simply have to have a questioning mind and someone feeding it ;)

Yeah, maybe they should just stop thinking too much and enjoy their teenage life.

Is it just me that thinks the ones doing this kind of thing actually are the ones that are considered intelligent, with good educations and possibly from well off families, with good prospects.

No you're right. That 'Jihadist John' who has been filmed doing all the beheadings is an intelligent well educated guy from a well off, respected family in London.
