I hope he`s properly treated the timber with preservative, because it looks to me he has used a lot of hazel. If it`s not treated properly they will be having major problems in about 3 years.:dbgrtmb:

In one picture it looks as if he has used dead wood, anyway. Not a good sign. Having made (untreated) wattles out of hazel I know the wood only stays viable for a short time.

Sheer lunacy. What's wrong with upvc and good old wood effect formica?

If it was built using properly seasoned oak it would last for decades. If he`s used dead or untreated hazel it will last a few years.:dbgrtmb:

He hasn't got far to go for replacement materials or pay high prices for it!
The main frame was oak IIRC

Seeing as he's cobbled it together out of bits and pieces couldn't he just bodge in a bit of a repair if it starts to fall apart? It's not like he's had to sell his soul for a £350,000 mortgage, after all.

I love it. The only problem is that he's got two kids and only one bedroom in the whole house! I think he's going to need to build an extension pretty soon.

I wondered about the water situation too. And what about keeping all the clothes clean? I bet they head down the road, dump the washing in the Laundromat and then take the kids swimming so they can all have a good chlorine souse. :heehee:

:heehee: They look quite wholesome in the photo but unless they have obliging relatives down the road who let them use the bathroom (not very self-sufficient) they must either wash in a bucket of cold pond water or, well, smell. There are many things I'm prepared to do to be a bit more 'green', but stinking isn't one of them.
