Well, we put in the night from hell last night with Fletch and his cough. His cough has been up and down with some days better than others, but last night took the biscuit, so this morning I phoned our vet.

As always they were absolutely fantastic (they are a small independent, owned by two partners) and said to take him in this afternoon. Because of the current predicament, they come out to the car park to see you and then they take the dog in without you for examination - he took to that surprisingly well given that he is a right little daddy's boy generally; by the time he came back back out there was a veterinary nurse in tow with the vet and they both said that they adored him and had pinched a couple of photos whilst he was in and asked if they could put them on their facebook page!

Upshot is, he has kennel cough, so they have prescribed him some Metacam for that, and also gave us some Panacur as a 'just in case' as apparently rescue dogs from other countries can be prone to the odd parasite - she didn't think it likely in his case, but wanted to be safe rather than sorry. A bill I could have done without, but such is life I suppose - at least he is OK.... indeed, her description was "a very happy, well settled healthy boy" which was nice to hear.

Glad that he'll be alright @Fat Controller :)
Our first one had that it can be worrying. Our 2nd one had the vaccine but i didn't realise that it goes up the nose,I wouldn't let them have that again. Our 3rd one had a very runny nose, he could hardly breathe with it, the vet said it was a form of kennel cough.

Aww bless him. Glad you know it's kennel cough. We thought dotty had that at first but it turned out to be heartworm. Luckily Fletch is just a lil pupster and there is no way at that age a heart worm could be at maturity to cause any coughing.

He is doing better already - still got a cough but not as bad, and definitely not feeling sorry for himself in the least! We are in full on puppy mode, pushing the boundaries as much as he can, and being oddly resistive to toilet training. Early days though I suppose.

                  What a lovely pup, FC.
No wonder you fell in love with him- I should imagine many GC members have too!

Did you see the Matt cartoon this week?
It shows a reporter outside Number 10 informing a TV cameraman

... "Afer isolating with his dog Dilyn,
the PM has now tested positive for kennel cough"

                  *sorry, can't find a link.

                    Thanks @pattie :)

We really could not have chosen him better if we picked him out of a litter, but he was sort of chosen for us as a good match by the folks at the charity. When he is not barrelling around the house and stealing our clothes (he has a thing for our clothes for whatever reason ) he is a really affectionate wee fellow.

I haven't seen that one, but will try and look it out.

Re 'potty' training..I don't know if you've maybe tried this already but you can get a spray that you spray on either puppy pads or news paper and then gradually move the paper nearer the door .Typical me can't remember the name:doh: but give it a google:thumbsup: not saying it'll work for Fletch but it worked for my two when they were pups.:dbgrtmb: if he's had a bad cough that could also contribute to his 'acccidents'...it can happen to the best of us..so I've been told..:heehee:

We had two puppies some years back. The male was housetrained at 11 weeks. I remember in the early hours of one morning I was woken by him barking. I rushed downstairs, thinking he wanted to go out into the garden. When I got there, he sat looking at the other one then gently nudged her...so she went out for a wee! He curled up and went back to sleep, never leaving his bed! I thought it was quite clever of him.
I'm sure your pup will be fine soon, it sometimes takes a little longer for them to 'cotton on'.

In the early weeks of having a puppy, when he wakes up, when he's just had his food, when he's been playing and in between those take him out until he's done something. After a few weeks or so he'll catch on that he's got to go outside. With mine I've learnt his body language when they want to do something and i quickly take them out, if they start to do it just shout at him that usually makes them stop what they're doing and quickly take them out.

I have found a spray which I will try, and I am also going for a different type of pad called 'puppy go here' and let's see if that does it. Of all the dogs I have had, he is the strangest in this respect - resolutely will not go out for a walk, and only goes in the garden on the odd occasion.

Aye, we are doing that with him - he just refuses to pee outside and only occasionally has he done it in the garden - we are even giving him treats when he does do it on the pad or in the garden (and he will come and look for his good boy treat now), but then he goes and does things like he has just done this evening and pee'd on Mrs C's pillow!
