ADVICE on Silver Birch damage

Good morning everyone. I’m looking for some advice in this silver birch damage. The Father in Law hit it by accident with a fence post and it’s taken the bark off. We’ve got someone coming today to look at it but I want other opinions as I don’t want it felled.

Is the tree ok? Is there anything I need to do?

the canopy is healthy, the tree is healthy. It’s about 25 years old.

Looks like it's been hit in the same spot before.
I reckon it will survive but it's not done it and favours, depends on if it gets disease in there.

 

It’s never been hit that I know of. The exposed bit that’s darker was still under bark before it all came off together. It’s put up with some pretty bad weather conditions these past few years. But I know nothing about trees ‍♂️

 

There is a rolled piece of bark on the left of the hole which kinds of suggests it was healing an old wound.
There seems to be some rot in there as well possibly some worm holes?

 

Hm. It's received damage before. It doesn't look as though much new damage has been done, just the extent of previous damage revealed. Investigate to see how much of the circumference has been de-barked (looks like about 1/3), and what the state of the wood is inside. Birch trees tend to rot from the inside quite fast. You could try pushing a screwdriver or something in to find the depth of the rot.

I don't think it will last, and it would be better to take it down before it blows down, perhaps replacing it with a new "mature" grown one as high as you want to afford (mabe £250 or so worth would be a good replacement).

Anyway, your man visiting will hopefully let you know. Perhaps you can report back?

That's a pity, but seems right from that photo.

You could search online for: "buy mature Betula pendula" (places like "ornamentaltrees" may be good value, but you'd have to investigate). Note that the "girth" specified means "circumnference of trunk", so divide that figure by 3 to get an approximate trunk diameter.

They are nice trees.
