I know this is the wrong thread, but it's spilled over to here about the virus.
The UK does seem to be taking a different route to Europe regarding the virus and not sure which is right.
Do you hide everyone away and hope it dies out? or do you get people infected, (that should be able to cope with it), and hope they become immune?

I think the jury is out on that one and only when looking back will we know the truth.

IMHO - the UK approach is more to do with timing - so Boris is taking actions which are proportionate to risk. Boris knows that the number of infections is accelerating - so he is taking action to control this acceleration. To be fair, unless you live on a different planet, we could all see this coming and had some time to prepare. Moving straight to lock down is too much of a step change - which will impact upon the whole population - when in reality only those that are over 70 or ill need to be shielded.

It's also to do with making sure that the NHS can cope with increased demand - so keeping the number of infections relatively low - the trade off being it may take us longer to get on top of the virus - but then we will have more time to come up with a vaccine/treatment. If the NHS go under we really are in trouble.

I think Boris is taking the right approach - God help us if Jezza was in power.

An interesting take. After all, here in Belgium, we have the same news, we had the same amount of warning, and a lockdown.

Yes, there was a little panic buying, but for 1-2 days. No more.

We now have a lockdown. We are only allowed to travel to get food, medical attention, or if in the critical services. I went to buy veg yesterday (running out of onions!!). Empty streets. Crowd control barriers at the supermarket. We had to take a trolley (enforces the 1.5 metre in one direction automatically). Limited no of people in the store at any time. No rationing in force, or required. There was food on the shelves. People were buying what they need for a week, no more. No riots, no looting.

I know the mentality of the different cultures varies. There is more of a feeling of community here, more caring for neighbours, more social responsibility. (Don’t take offence, but my personal opinion and experience)

I think the uncertainty in the UK is actually increasing the fear, and the tension.... again, just my opinion.

Am I scared? Yes, to be honest. But stripping the shelves of loo rolls won’t take the virus away....

I do think that the entire world is feeling its way around on this one - and to be fair, no one way of doing things can be said to be better than any other until we get out the other side and are able to assess how things went with the benefit of hindsight. What we do need to do now, is work together.

I don't care whether it is this country or another. I don't care what the persons race, colour, creed, sexuality, how they voted, or anything else for that matter. When it comes down to it, we are all skin and bone and we have a responsibility to look after each other

So Herr Starmer one the contest, no shock there. Not a great time for the new broom to sweep through, if indeed he'll be able to with the NEC. At least he'll be a greater challenge to Boris :)

Not something I'm interested in,a s I subscribe to "Whoever you vote for the Government always gets in", but I do wonder if a Lawyer has the background and assimilated skill to run the country better than e.g. a Captain of Industry (you know, like Trump :) ) and as such I am curious what the thinking was in the party choosing that skillset for leader.

I would expect a Lawyer to be verbally agile at the dispatch box ... but that is just more dissent and "look at me" that I have got sick of over recent decades, rather than actually "getting stuff done".

Well at least he has around 5 years to prep :) Is it me, or is it exceptionally rare to find the exact right person in the PM role for the crises we see at the time? I'm genuinely looking forward to the spats between bojo and Starmer. I also genuinely hope Starmer can sort his party sufficiently to get them out of in-fighting and providing a decent opposition without needless squabbles

I saw Starmer on the Andrew Marr show this afternoon. He started off by saying that Boris had made a bad decision about 'herd immunity' and then said that he had no intention of knocking the government during this crisis.

He was on the show immediately after Matt Hancock who stated "Herd immunity is not our policy, it's not our goal." :heehee: He didn't mention who said it but it was chief scientific officer Sir Patrick Vallance who said that if enough of the population eventually get infected by the coronavirus and then develop immunity, it will become much harder for the virus to spread. So they're both right and both wrong! In other words, they're politicians.

Apart from that comment I thought that Starmer did a good job with the interview. He may turn out OK.
