It can't afford to run without Britain. That's why they were making it so difficult for us to leave.

Just reported on the news that a record number have been STOPPED in the channel this morning.
What they actually mean is PICKED UP, big difference.
That actually means they have made it to Dover.
          Very few get sent back.

No don't want to sound flippant to be honest, but it's not helping.
The amount of people that you come across these days who's first language is not English is amazing.
If they are wearing a mask you have no chance of understanding them and it may be me, but you are made out to be the stupid one.

They are not building enough houses, or schools, hospitals, doctors.... none of the services are keeping up with the increase in population

What is the right sort of house Jiffy?

They could build caves around here and some trogladite would buy them.
Honestly how they afford such places amazes me, but they do. Lots are just selling up in London, come down here then demand high speed rail to London.
Which when It happens just makes the whole housing and infrastructure problem worse around here.
But this is what local planners seem to want, guess it's just a council tax thing.

I wonder if they are not selling simply because of the huge asking prices and therefore huge deposits being asked?

The house I live in is not huge by any stretch - two bedrooms, small living room, tiny kitchen and a fair sized back garden. If I owned it, I would extend it to be fair, but the value has to now be sitting around £430k - for us to buy a house similar to this one, I would need a minimum of £43k on the hip and that is before moving costs and legal costs. Just where would I be supposed to find that, especially as I have spent my entire working life paying private rent?

Which kind of points out the problem down here @Fat Controller .
You could get a 4 bedroom detached around here for that money.
                          But locals can't afford that.

The really stupid bit of it all is that I have been paying private rent for 28 years, the amount of which for the past 20 years at least has been the equivalent or more than people would pay for a mortgage. In that 28 years, I have not missed one single payment - been a day or two late once in a while, but never more than a couple of days; yet to the banks, I am a massive risk that they won't take on a mortgage because I don't have a massive deposit?

The real killer - the house I live in was bought by our landlady weeks before we moved in for £250k; it is now worth £430k ten years later, that is almost double in value - - so if a bank had mortgaged us on this same property with no deposit, they would now be ten years into the term AND have a further £180k equity sitting that they would benefit out of if I were to default on a mortgage. So where exactly is the risk?
