After Brexit - am I stupid or what?

    Prices are stupid!

    A niece of ours bought a bedsit for £350,000 (mortgage from the company she works at) in an area of North London that we used to think of as very downmarket (that's being polite).

    You can buy a very nice five bedroom semi with large rooms and a garden, with sea views, in Norfolk for £200,000. :doh:

      This is the problem that I see for all those trying to get into the property market.
      Personally I have a house and I live in it, end of, it could be worth 50 quid or 2 million, its all of no interest to me obviously as long as it relative to the market.

      But over the years buying property to rent has been a big money maker for some, and that is why we are where we are.

      Too many people owning more than one property. And if it's possible to get a tenant in who then pays the mortgage your on the gravy train.
      Not saying it's wrong, but it's not right when some can't even get a start due to paying exorbitant rent.

        Shove in a high speed rail link to London and that house would cost 4 times that amount.

            Totally agree with Shiney. Prices are stupid. I moved into this council flat with garden in 1964. I can't remember what the rent was, my salary was just about £17.00 per week as a policeman. Then, I think it was Mrs Thatcher who decided to sell off council homes. IMO a very very bad move. We were offered our flat for £8000.00 In all honesty we had no idea what eight grand looked like.

            I know of many tennants of the day, with very shady backgrounds, suddenly paying up their rent arrears and plonking down the ready cash. Within five years you could place the property on the market. So money attracted money. A couple of years ago. A woman a few doors away, sold her groundfloor flat for around two grand plus. She is now living in a posh garden shed in her daughter's garden. The daughter lived upstairs.

            I love my little flat and it hardly costs me all that.

            Very often I watch the TV and, Escape to the country. WOW! Some of those out of London homes, and so cheap all with losts of land. As I think it was Pete mentioned, the locals just like those in Kent, haven't a hope in hell of buying.

            It has often crossed my mind. There are so many wonderful areas up North etc. I'd like to see firms moving out of cramped London. The PM gained many votes from the North. Time he began to spread the bounderies of the big smkoe and help more to be better paid and able to get on the property ladder.

            Wow! Can't remember my 1964 salary but in 1962 my pay was £2.50 per week plus commission. No rent and all food included. By 1965, with no overheads, I had managed to save enough to buy a brand new car for £525 and still have the original invoice. :biggrin:

              The 3-4 bed houses are the one's that are selling even they're sold before there built, the one's which aren't selling is the one's where people have a small plot of land and they then build a house then make it into flats etc even the 60-70-80's house are slow to move which have large-ish garden's, even houses to rent are moving fast 4 bed house with muture postage stamp garden which the owner have just got a digger into and rib anything with a stem bigger an your arm is on the market for £1800 a month the garden is now trashed and i mean trashed, the size of the bedrooms are just the size for a bed and that's it you can just walk around one side of the bed

                No tears shed here I'm afraid. The rich bankers will just have to hunker down and go on a luxury world cruise whilst the EU make their decision.

                There's also the same risk to their own financial service markets as, despite BREXIT, both are greatly intertwined so any denial of access would be a case of cutting their noses off to spite their face:wallbanging: I think it's a case of the EU wanting to put pressure on the UK to give way to their demands, which is not going to happen, and it's the EU unelected Officials talking and not the Big Banks.:cat-kittyandsmiley::coffee:

                        The only way there will be an agreement is if our side gives in.
                        So, all the time there is no agreement it mean we are still holding our ground.

                          Well, it appears that the EU and Msr Barnier still want us to comply with the EU laws and legislation and, over the last few months, have been churning out more rules that will restrict and bind members to the unelected organisation more than ever.
                          They still want us not to have complete sovereignty of the UK, they still want us to recognise the EU Courts of Law and be accountable to them, they still want the same fishing rights to the UK waters. They're still a little bemused by the fact that this UK Government is not the same as the previous and that we're not prepared to give way to their demands as we did in the previous negotiations.
