I suppose it's easier for me. At my age there's little that I want so I never bother to look at any sites outside the UK. If we buy anything from places such as Amazon (spit! :heehee:) we make sure it's here in the UK. :noidea:

As far as I can see the EU is going out of it's way to be as difficult to trade with as possible. Don;t think it will last forever but they'll continue to be a pain for some years.
Will be 'interesting' to see how the issues surrounding Ireland pan out, they have certainly got the snotty end of the stick!
The so-called exodus of financial businesses from the UK has now slowed and will stop, and the influx of same from EU which is never reported is balancing things. The picture will be different but same channel (see what I did there lol)
As long as UK based businesses see the opportunity to trade more within the UK, and can make their potential customers understand they have suppliers on their doorstep then there is every reason to believe the UK will be OK. It's just going to be a slog to change mindset of how trade works; it's changed and we must work with it or go under.

True, but if the general public keep buying the cheaper imports, then nothing will change.
Look at the Guernsey Tomato, is there anyone actually still growing them anymore. The growers said "What you pay in the supermarket is not what growers get".

I think the Guernsey tomato couldn't compete with Spanish and Dutch imports.
We do get English ones now though.

I'm keeping my eye on the veg I get from Tesco (delivered, so can't choose myself). My green beans are from Senegal and courgettes from Mexico. Obviously they are not in season so just occasional treats at the moment, we'll see in the summer if the in-season products change to UK grown or continue to be EU ones. I sincerely hope we will not start shipping cabbages from New Zealand.

The fact remains that smaller firms that used to have the huge German market at their doorstep are now struggling to find enough customers in the UK to keep their business running. Vice versa for the EU small firms.

It's the big ones who will decide weather to source locally or go for further away overseas suppliers. Tesco, I'm looking at you.

I wonder if cabbage farming makes a living in the UK, and how much land it takes to make it profitable in a larger scale? This is a small, densely populated island after all.

Morrison's were selling runner beans from Kenya all last summer.
I think often the British farmers cant guarantee continued large scale supply on some veg.

I'd offer the fruits of my 250 asparagus plants, but you won't be wanting to import any nasty, French veg, now will you?:biggrin:

My taste buds have changed, so I have benefited from imported food. I love Thai cuisine, I have been married now for 19 years and when my wife first arrived in the UK it was missing Thai cuisine that would make her home sick as much as missing her mum.

Now it is so easy to get Asian cuisine, we regularly have, egg plant, papaya, yard bean, morning glory, bamboo shoots, kale, lemon grass etc etc in our fridge, plus loads of chillies.
