    I love it when you get a really good take when you are wreck fishing, spend 10 minutes pumping the rod up from 200 feet only to tangle with another angler under the boat & then the skipper cuts YOUR line rather than untangle it from the other anglers.

    I also love it when 30 seconds later you spot your fish floating 30 yards from the boat & you get the skipper to come about & net the fish (a 6lb Ling :dbgrtmb:)

    I pulled one up once from 200 feet off Loop Head.

    Anglo Saxon for long.

    Being Ambivilent, I likes a bit of ling, I likes a bit of Pollack, I love a bit of Gurnard, but I don't mind a bit of Cod.

    I think most things (food wise) are better than cod. I honestly can't understand why cod is popular enough to be over fished. It has virtually no flavour, and the texture is such that it falls apart too easily when cooked, and if you don't get the timing bang on, it ends up just being like eating fibres that get stuck between your teeth, while at the same time being completely devoud of any flavour at all.

    But that's just me:)

    Not just you Dave, unless its really fresh, i.e. just caught it yourself, it has very little flavour. It's the batter with salt and vinegar that has fooled the public.

    Cant beat a good bit of Gurnard,Bream, Mullet(although, don't eat more than 1 a year),trigger fish,dogfish & mackerell. Followed by Moules en Cruit & a nice bit of Lava Bread.

    I regularly eat Pollack, much more flavour than Cod, even before Huge Furry whittingstall was trying to get people interested.

    And as for Garfish......

    I agree with Clueless - just about anything is better than cod.
    In Scotland, fish and chips was always Haddock and chips.
    Haddock is a super fish - surprised it didn't get a mention here.
    Our local hotel does the best haddock and chips in the world. Fried food is not my favourite but they do beautiful fresh Haddock, landed at Arbroath the same day, cooked in perfect batter and served with perfect chips. A tall order when I see the rubbish other people think they can seve for fish and chips.

    Otherwise I like Mackerel - as long as it came out of the water in the last 2 hours
    Herring - fresh from the water - just dipped in seasoned flour and fried in butter and served with fresh, new potatoes and plenty of butter
    Sea Bream and Sea Bass - but not that awful farmed stuff they are selling now.
    Trout and Salmon - the real thing - not that farmed stuff, that's just inedible.
    I think the secret to fish is fresh, fresh, fresh.

    I Love a bit of haddock too, but its a Scottish fish mainly. Don't get fresh ones in the fish & chip shops, only frozen.

    I'll keep my eye open in the fishmongers next time, if they do stock them, i've not noticed.

    Catch the odd sardine in the summer. They are a lot longer than the tinned ones.

    Best tasting fish is Hake.

    Ziggy. Mullet? Have you seen what those things eat? They congregate around sewer pipes!

    Whilst fishing I had a boat come close inshore, apparently for a photo opportunity being newly purchased, and cut through my line, but credit to the skipper who re-imbursed me for my terminal tackle, shock leader, line, etc. (he didn't think anyone would be casting out that far)

    A few casts later, one of my hooks went though the eye of the lead weight on the tackle I'd lost, resulting in both retrieval of the lost tackle plus a double shot of fish that had hooked themselves on the lost gear!

    A similar thing happened to me but it involved getting soaking wet & then retiring to the wine bar to dry out.

    Kindred,

    Only time i've every worried about what fish eat was shortly after we found several bits of a womans body on the Chesil.

    It did go through my mind about how many dogfish & crabs i'd eaten from there in the previous months, they'd stripped her clean in 3 months.

    Did the dogfish or the crabs taste like Spam? :) :)

    The only fish I wouldn't eat would be mullet.
