Freddy, When I set to select anything, one of my first thoughts is fragrance and bird appeal. I look first at those plants which offer both, then I move on if neither is suitable.

Freedy, In general no harm in the odd tidy up trim with sharp sacetures but keep it minimal, cheerys are very suceptable to bacterial canker and you dont want too many wounds

    Freddy,

As a greiving widow of 2 cherries earlier this yr I would not prune them no way at all til spring next yr and then I would be extremly tempted not to do it even then.

Possibly paranoid I know but I am still in the initial stages of tree loss.

If you wanted a winter flowering shrub for next to a sitting area, you would have been better off going for Daphne Odora or Sarcoccocas. Both, highly scented.:D

If you have any clearance ie safe distance then choose a mahonia-I got one today and they are very attractive but lethal.

I will be looking up the two you recommend Dai-thankyou, do you remember under my oaks? There is where I want a few more eyecatchers.

We have a deck out the back side of our house. The wind 99% of the time goes from right to left. So through the years of planting the fragrant are planted on the right side of the deck and beyond to the right side of the property, so sitting on the deck is a wonderful experience even with your eyes closed.
