You use straws for drinking, another use for straws is to stick them in the ground :roflol:

I don't know what the plants in the pic are, but I thought it was fairly common practice to arrange straw like that around, erm, strawberries. And marrows etc, in fact any crop where the fruit would otherwise sit on wet ground and possibly rot. Ie the straw holds the crop off the floor.

Look like the marrow family , do you think the straws are meant to hole up a mesh ??

I've just realised I might be looking at something else to everyone else. I we talking about the straw between rows of plants, or the stick things which might be straws sticking up?

thank you clueless, i was indeed referring to the hay on the ground, I though it looks aestetically pleasant but: will it attract pests do you think?

Ahh, one of the quirks of the english language Mira, straw is kept singular even if there is a pile of it.

By saying straws, we were thinking it more likely meant drinking straws.

I think on the contrary, it will help keep pests off the crop. Straw is not the most pleasant thing to traverse if you're a snail for example, because the ends are quite prickly (I'm sure more than a few of us have actually cut ourselves on it once or twice - its worse than a paper cut).
