    Anyone got any antique tools?

I've a rake which seems to be Victorian and a wheelbarrow which must be very old. (pic of barrow below)

    Hey Kindred,

Nice wheel, the wood work looks very well looked after.

Got a big old fork which I will take a pic of tommorow, no handle left though

Wish i'd taken a pic of the onion hoe before I sold it, looked like a mini plough.

I've my doubts about the age of the barrow too. If it had any age and usage the corners of the legs would be rounded and the edges of the strut at the front would be worn due to bumping into things.
    Looks nicely made though.
My paternal grandfather was a wheelwright and waggon builder and he made me a junior size wooden barrow when I was about 4. I've still got some of his tools - wooden planes, spoke shaves and a draw knife.

I've got a hoe going back to the early 19th century and a border edging tool around the same period. I must admit the woodwork on the wheelbarrow did look a bit new along with the bolts on the sides.

I particulary like antique and vintage secateurs, here are some from my small collection.

The pair top left are Wilkinson Sword with Firth Stainless blades, absolutely razor sharp and give the cleanest of cuts. The Rolcuts, bottom right are 60 years old and in regular use. The oldest are the pair centre left which date from about 1890.

      [IMG] They are fantastic aa

Good job you found this old thread, I lovingly restored the fork & rake that were in the hedge, gave them new handles which I oiled up with teak oil & then forgot to show anyone:DOH: Did the cordless drill up at the same time.

Harry, did they have machine-guns when you were 7??

Seriously though, that sort of drill was known as a 'breast drill' (steady) - so named because you pushed with your chest (unless you were a gal, of course) whilst steadying with one hand and turning with the other.

Its a 2 speed one too:thumbsup: You have to unscrew the wheel & put it in a different hole.

I've got a couple of those Rolcut secateurs and they are very good.

There's a wonderful ironmongers near where Steve R lives that has their own little museum. They've got loads of tools hanging from the ceiling. They also have what appears to be hundreds of little wooden drawers along one wall. These contain things like loose nails and screws and the whole unit was built 175 years ago when they opened the shop.

I've shown these photos before. They aren't of me :heehee: but the man let me take the photos. It is in the biggest boatyard for about 100 miles!!!

He's using an old bow drill.
