            Hi,

We have been on both side of the Dental fence and depending where you live you will find fewer and fewer NHS dentists.

Today seems NHS dentists are so overloaded you will be lucky to find one to take you on, and if you do you always get the feeling they are under such pressure you wonder if you are getting their best treatment/ time ?

After our old NHS dentist retired we had to move but found a private practice offering the DenPlan scheme, but the way the practice is run and the level of treatment you get is simply so much better, and the one we are with is really top class, judged on a lifetime of NHS dentistry.

To join their practice and Denplan you do have to pay for a consulation to see if they will take you on and how much it will cost, as you may have to pay for some remedial work before being accepted by Denplan, but as everyone is so different is hard to say how much each month, though ours is just over £30 each.
Might sound a lot, but given the quality of service and being a large practice with several other denstists, knowing that if you are in pain you can be treated very quickly its well worthwhile.

We do hear first hand stories from local folk who are still with NHS dentists and it makes you shudder, though it was a good system, sad to say don't think we could ever go back to the NHS dentistry system.

Just hope the main NHS Hospital system never goes the same way !!

Luckily my body is apparently a perfect machine to turn that daily slice of cheese into rock hard teeth and nails.

This is to the ongoing disappointment of Mr Devil, my dentist, who is the Pessimist of the pessimists. I have already told him that dentists are not allowed to make sounds as "tut tut", sharp intakes of breath, sad head shaking, or "I'll have a closer look at these xrays and we'll talk about them on your next visit. " He persists, and I duly visit him every six months to have a gloomy thrill on my life.

Regarding the other parts of my body, I guess it's the dentist approach from now on. Accept and KEEP the free, voluntary screening appointments. :frown:

I go for my NHS dental check-up @£22.70 and the dentist always says that I need an x-ray for her to check properly. I always refuse and she then sets my next check-up for only six months' time because she 'needs to keep an eye on things as I won't have the x-ray'. As I go to the hygienist every three months I tell the dentist that the hygienist is keeping an eye on my teeth and gums. When I pay at reception I then change the six months to a year :heehee:.

I pay privately for the hygienist (£45) but claim it back on our medical cash plan. We pay a monthly insurance, about £50, and that covers us for dentist, optician (new glasses), chiropody, chiropractor, physio, osteopathy, private consultations and a lot of other things. The amount they will refund per year depends on how much you pay per month. We tend to get back more than we pay out but it still costs us the monthly fee. We consider it worth it as we need a fair amount of maintenance nowadays :old:. I go to the chiropodist every six weeks, we both have regular chiropractic treatments, Mrs Shiney has acupuncture every three months (it has allowed her to completely stop the painkillers :blue thumb:) and a number of other things.

Appointment went well this morning. He did the two stages in just over an hour. Cost just under 180 Euros, just have to have crown put on.

This Dentist is part of the private hospital chain here (3 hospitals, 8 clinics). I get discounts from my free Continente grocery card which has a medical cover, plus I get credit on my card. It does not cover hospital confinements just outpatient. Example, a Surgeon consultation of 30 minutes costs 70 Euros but I pay 42£ plus get 13E on my card so effectively pay 29E. Also goes for blood tests and x-rays.

Sorry @Selleri I seem to have hijacked your thread with dental prices!

Back to doctors :heehee:. Mrs Shiney needed to see a knee specialist so she went to the doctor and he said there's at least a three month wait for an NHS appointment. Three days later she saw a consultant privately (one of the best ones according to friends and research on the internet) at a nearby private hospital. The twenty minute consultation (we already had x-rays with us) cost £190 :rolleyespink: but we can get £152 back from our insurance. :blue thumb:

I've always kept appointments for screenings. I've had the cervical scan, the mammogram and the bowl screening, all was normal. The mammogram was a bit painful but I'd rather have it done, but have to keep a check myself as they tell you.

We have private dental insurance called dentaplan, it makes it more affordable when you need a lot doing.
Hubby took it out first, his dentist was going private and said that it didn't cost much more than the NHS and said that the NHS was putting the prices up anyway. I have a checkup every 6 months but hardly have anything done. Apart from having a crown put on one of the molars. The NHS dentist wouldn't do it because he said that it was tricky being at the back and can cause problems with the jaw. So i went private the same one as hubby's and he did it and I've never looked back. I have to be careful what i eat with it because my gum bone has receded so much that it's very loose.
