Hi just a quick question does anyone know of anywhere in Suffolk that we can get some cheap scaffolding boards. We want to make a large raised bed around our tree in front garden and feel scaffold boards would be a strong cheap cheerful way to do this.

How about using 18" paving slabs, sink into the ground a couple of inches and secured around the top by a bit of welded angle iron, or ornemental ropework. This way it can be (nearly) circular as it is round a tree.

    Cheers, Tony.

I bought sleepers, but cheapest place I found was Corby, which isn't exactly local to Suffolk I'm afraid :(

I have looked for cheap scaffolding boards, and not found a good (bulk) source locally.

Worth trying local scaffolders though as they will have damaged boards that they need to get rid of, and they might be happy to just let you have them.

We are building square one the rest of the garden has slabs put the paving slabs I have taken up would do the trick I should think.
I will contact some local scaffolders and see what I can do I think.

      Thanx for the replies :)

If you plan on raising the sides by more than one plank height, bear in mind that it'll take up to 6 tonnes of soil to fill a 3 metre square. That will more than likely put more pressure at the weakest points than the planks can withstand. I'm in Suffolk, and my contractor recommended that there wasn't a shortcut when going above 1 plank.

For a 3mSq raised box, the treated sleeper style timbers and soil to fill were close to £600!

      Regards,
      Steve

Yours is very close to what I had in my head but not as large as yours. We are digging a patio out in the back garden so some of the dirt from there will be used to fill ;) my hubby has said we will need to brace it etc so it holds the weight of the dirt.:) I shall be showing him yours so he knows what I have in my head lol
