There are no vents visible, so I'm guessing those were not put in when the stack was removed thus sealing off the chimney. Unfortunately, I have no idea when the removal took place, so it may have been par for the course back in the day.

The obvious thing is that the chimneys are on the outside wall of the house, so, presumably, any vents would be obvious on the outside walls? As has been pointed out, I know this may be "common sense" to those with experience of building work/chimneys/etc but as I have no experience of building work/chimneys/etc any and all advice on the matter is greatly appreciated.

As luck would have it, there are a couple of chimney sweeps listed in our local parish magazine, so it is something I can get onto very quickly

The reason I put the " common sense " remark is that several posts above your " lateral thinking " one chimneys etc were being discussed.

There a lot of threads not created for entertainment value but that never stops you making jokes etc does it.

Get in touch and get one in then @"M" ..
Usually they have a vent near the top or capped with a gap, but as your chimneys are not visible from outside I would say not vented, unless you can see a vent in your loft.. In which case that would let smell into your house..In the 60s it was quite common to shut chimneys off or even remove stacks but sadly they were done to a much lower standard than today and many people ended up with no vents at all and lots of problems..
Also if you have exterior chimneys then damp could be getting through the exterior old dried bricks and mortar into the chimneys and that will cause smell...

I think that you have just summed up my primary concern; thank you!
I'll start with the chimney sweep and take it from there

I cant help much other than to say I have one chimney that has been taken down and the roof tiles replaced to cover it over, as far as I know no vents but it is pretty tightly sealed on the lower end.
I also have another in a bedroom which is sealed off, but still open at the roof, and another which is not sealed off as it is used as the flue for a gas fire, but was originally an open fire hearth.

Never seem to get any strange smells from any of them.:)

Well, all I can say it that you've not experienced the "rose like perfume" that drifts into the Lounge when one of my cats has visited the Cat Litter trays in the Kitchen:hate-shocked:.....they even come back and look at me for approval.!!!

Can you not track it down to one area, "M"? Can you describe the smell, Sour, smokey, sickly sweet, fishy etc.???

I don't know a lot about it, but I must admit that I always thought that blocked up chimneys needed an airflow through them to prevent dampness and smells etc. I agree that a sweep might be the best person to talk to in the first instance.
