          Excellent @martin-f - I was wondering about replacing the timer with a moisture sensor so it only waters when needed - any ideas on what could be used?

          Maybe a micro controlled unit like this:
          Soil Sensor Moisture Hygrometer Module PCB For Arduino Pi Raspberry 606034480254 | eBay

          I seem to recall @ricky101 is a whizz with this sort of set up too ?

              A small warning....sometimes the connection tubing stretches out a little. When the water turns on the tubing pops off...allowing all the water to rush out of that one outlet. We take all the piping off and cut a half inch off to make it tight again. Also we change the batteries once a year.

              Some of these companies parts are interchangeable. Once you get a set up you can do allot of different things.

                I have an in lawn watering system and the rain sensor is nothing more than a thick felt washer which when swelled up, dsiconnects the contacts on the system. I'm sure there are things I don't see, but this silly washer has been quite reliable for about 20 or so years. :)

                  @JWK , and all .
                  What water controllers do you use . I need a simple but reliable unit for the garden at our caravan. All get good reviews , but when you read the one star reviews you get woeful tales of leaking joints and poor battery life. So which is the most reliable make :scratch:

                    Thanks John . As this hot weather is forecast to go on and on , I ordered my watering kit yesterday. On the 10 best water timer review sites I did view the Darlec but in the end opted for the Orbit ( similar price ) . They both have simple functions and are rated high on reliability. I am connecting this to the Hozelock universal watering kit which uses 13mm hose.
                    I will fit it at the caravan next week ( if any plants have survived ! ) Hopefully I will set it up correctly and not empty lake Windermere :snorky:
                    Irrigation systems are not subject to hose pipe bans are they ?

                      Just received my Orbit water controller and the Hozelock irrigation kit . The Orbit is robustly made and programming it is really really simple. You just follow the setting dial. The set up photo below shows the Controller , pressure reducer , Hozelock tap connector and irrigation hose Ø13 x 15 metres long.
                      Just fitted one sprinkler at the end of the hose for a test . Seems a pretty simple system to install . I'll fit it up at the caravan on Sunday. So you can plan for 40 days and nights of rain after this date :snorky:
