baby fish in our first pond

    they are baby goldfish we are very suprised didnt think it would happen especially with all the cats about in the area

      Cats, I don't find a real problem, herons are the bad guys, they move in as soon as it gets light.
      So in the summer months that is pretty early.

      The snag I found with baby goldfish is they seemed to be mostly black and hard to see in the pond. Or maybe just that the herons got the colourful ones more easily...Certainly my cats showed absolutely no interest.

        They start out black but change colour as they get a couple of years old.
        Mine start black slowly turn orange and some then turn white in old age.:biggrin:

        Hmmm - mine just stayed black. A few got some gold patches, but I ended up with lots of big black fish...

            our baby fish are black and about 2 inch long quite hard to see at times

              I've never had any that dont change colour as they age, I assume they start out black as a kind of camouflage so its easier for them to hide when small.
