That's the one! Before we changed the uv bulb we were having to empty that tray out every day and clean off straggly algae in it. Its all been cleaned out since the pic and even had some pond bomb crumbled into it

I'm going to hazard a guess and assume the u/v is in there somewhere. I'm also going to assume that you upped the rate by changing a setting on the pump itself. If both of these assumptions are correct, then it should be fine :dbgrtmb: As to the apparently sick fish, it's chances might be slim, even with medical intervention. It seems like you're doing the right things, so fingers crossed :fingers crossed:

Yeah, husband said something about the flow rate not being set properly and had to work it out timing how long it took to fil a 10ltr bucket etc etc. The aquatics man told him the rate it needed to be for our pond size etc. They did say the filter was more than adequate for the pond size. The other thing is that some of the fish are about 20yrs old so may just be on its way out. I also wondered whether it having babies could have contributed to the odd behaviour?!

Unlikely I think that having babies is the cause. It could be just old, or as already mentioned it could be the swim bladder. Fish are like that sometimes, they just get sick for no apparent reason. To give them the best chance generally, one needs to keep the water right, so regular monitoring and maintenance is very important. If it were just goldfish, then chances are these issues wouldn't arise. Koi are a much different kettle of.....fish  Their sheer size alone makes them a very mucky resident, lots of waste.
Do let us know how things develop

First of all, please separate the baby fish from the pond. Some fish species may find it as a tasty snack. Check the relation between mother and baby. If they are attached, don't separate them. In case of food, specialist fry food will be better. Else their major food source is the algae and plankton present in the water.

Hi Concetta, thanks for the info. We've actuakly got the pond man in now sorting it all out....basically the pond is filthy and it is currently empty and being cleaned. We've actually got 7 koi-we only thought 5! Loads of goldfish and golden orfe-he's not sure how the orfe have survived the filth!!! Theres loads of babies too....way more than id ever thought....weirdly some are a weird mix of goldies and koi. We've taken them over to the big pond near our allotment which already has goldfish and the babies canmake that their home. Hoping the big clean will resolve the funny fish issues.
