Last year I grew beetroot quite successfully in containers, but this year my crop was miserable and all begun to flower (see pic below) but does anyone know why...

what variety is this ? maybe too much sun, or irregular watering /feeding ? or failure on the seed merchant. It happens a lot this days, try Kohlrabi next year, good keepers too, sow them 1 seed every 2" and as they grow, thin them out, take every alternate as they grow for your meals, same with carrots.
I have grown garlic in wide container or trough.. Some of my leeks are still in a long trough now, meaning to be transplanted to my mini allotment, but are growing well.
Will do over weekend when I cleared rest of weeds lol.

I don't honestly know the name of the beetroot, but I have just pulled my garlic which was wonderfully developed and very large. I also had a huge amount of good sized onions this year, but for some reason the beetroot just flopped...

My peppers are usless this year and I feel it may have been poor, or wrong, compost starting them off, so you are not on your own.

Maybe they dried out at some stage dabbit, this would cause a check in growth and when they start again, the first thing they do is flower.
Try a bolt resistant variety next year, like Boltardy.

hans, on the subject of poor compost, there's a lot of it about. I know we need to conserve peat, but since they've stopped putting it in composts the stuff we have now is pretty awfull.
There doesn't seem to be any fertiliser in the stuff, and it goes from soaking wet to bone dry in a couple of hours. I've never had so may starved plants, and as for liquid feed, well you daren't stop using it.
