I read on the BBC website that The Times (no I don't read it!) have compiled a list of the best places to live in various regions of Britain.
I wonder if others agree with the places selected? The only 1 I can comment on is the "winner" in Scotland which is an area of Edinburgh called Stockbridge. I lived there for about 6 years, hated the place which was full of yuppies all desperately trying to get to the top of whatever heap they aspired to. Ok I could walk to work and it was within easy walking distance of the centre of Edinburgh but was delighted to see the back of the place. I wonder what criteria is used when compiling these lists? Maybe the compilers have vested interests:scratch:. Winchester is the overall winner. I don't know it at all, maybe it is a really lovely place to live?

I wonder what data they base their results on?

Anywhere in the South East as there is less rain and more sunshine.

The Times probably has a slightly different criteria list and measuring method than a lot of "ordinary" people, to be honest. :snork:

Personally I'm very fond of the Lothians area and now Fife. Admittedly this is biased as I grew up on the coast in East Lothian and now live in Fife! However, I do really enjoy the climate, the rolling countryside with broad skyscapes, and the easy travel distance to our capital city.

If I were to return to the UK (which will not happen), it would be my last residence on the Isle of Wight. Love that place. Everything you need plus almost tropical climate (lived in Bonchurch near Ventnor). The only place outside Europe that has a Gecko colony ... they are my house friends here. :yahoo:

Oh Bonchurch is a lovely place, I used to love visiting the pond to feed the ducks, terrapins and fish:)

for those that haven't been to bonchurch it has the most beautiful pond adjacent to the high street a very picturesque place to sit and read a book or admire the wildlife

Another lovely place to visit that many don't is the park almost right next to the popular botanic gardens at Ventnor (which now charge an expensive entrance fee) it has a wonderful little shallow stream with flagstones to step on and huge Gunnera manicata (Giant Rhubarb) a gorgeous specimen of Tulipifera chinense (Chinese Tulip Tree) a really perfect place for a picnic!

We also love the Isle of Wight although I like the island more than Mr Kandy does.Would so love to live there to spend my twilight years but Mr Kandy is adamant that we will never live there. He doesn't mind visiting the island for a holiday (Cowes week this year) but doesn't want to live there all the time.

We love the climate, the beaches, downs, forests etc and it is nice to think that we can walk for miles and not see another soul because all the tourists clog up the beaches and Godshill:snorky:

I read the other year that the South East is the driest part of the U.K. So reckon we need to retire down that way plus it is close enough to Wight:snorky:

I'd echo the staying off the Island if you need to regularly travel off by car mainly because of the ridiculous ferry prices... I'm part of the local cactus society and we're getting quite worried about the cost of paying for speakers to come over and give a talk were looking at almost £100+ a time peak season...

these sort of lists usually take into consideration crime rates pollution housing situation employment transport connections viability..... but in order to ascertain that a place is best for us we have to know what criteria have been used to classify it, and whether they meet our criteria. There used to be a website called up my street, if I remember right.
you would enter a postcode and up would come a very detailed description of the area and people that live in it and most businesses in the area.

YEP this is the best place to live :yay::wub2:
A REMOTE Carmarthenshire lake shrouded in Welsh legend has been named as one of the 1,000 must-see sights across the globe by an influential travel bible.

Llyn y Fan Fach, 12km southeast of Llandovery in the Brecon Beacons, is the only spot in Wales to make the list, which was put together by Lonely Planet.

The travel guide describes the Mid Wales beauty spot as “enchanting” and recounts the tale of The Lady of the Lake.

“This isolated drop of blue, beneath a cirque of raw Welsh hills, is enchanting – and enchanted,” Lonely Planet’s 1,000 Ultimate Sights tells readers.

I'm biased here because it's where I've grown up, but I love the views over the Severn Valley in Worcestershire especially with the Malvern hills in the background :)

If I were to ever move though it would be South Devon inland from Torbay, probably around Totnes and the Dart Estuary.

We are considering moving in the next couple of years so I have been searching the net on
Right Move to see what's about all over the country and at the price range we can afford. We would like decent weather,no Motorways, no high speed rail links, near to shops as we want to be able to get the supplies in when we can no longer use the car,a small parcel of land so we can still grow fruit and veggies and a decent internet speed oh and no oil heating or asbestos roofs:snorky:

Up to yet all the decent ones are far to expensive and the not too expensive ones have all the bad points that we don't want so for the time being we are going to plod on here even though the garden is being outgrown with all the plants we keep buying:sad:
