    Hi,

I'm a novice gardener, just moved into a property with a garden that has not been looked after for a while.

We have some bushes growing, the leaf and fruit appears of which appears to match the description of blackcurrent. Grateful if anyone could confirm. And they have what looks like some kind of bristle on them. Is that normal?

    Thanks

    Chris

It certainly looks like one to me. Those tiny spines should fall away but it's unusual to be that pronounced in the first place. Maybe an early cultivar??

If the berries are slightly larger than normal it could also be a Jostaberry, a cross between blackcurrant and gooseberry. Might explain the pronounced spines.

Thanks for the responses both. Although it description of the prickly currant seems to fit, I can't find any reference to it outside the USA?

Welcome to the forums, Chris :sign0016: What is your location? :dunno: I ask because "normal" can be "relative"
