Folks, I posted on here a few weeks back looking for advice on a lawnmower for a small lawn and a few people came back suggesting the Bosch AHM38G manual lawnmower which I duly went out and bought.

We had rolls of turf laid and before today I had given it 2 cuts with my old Flymo lawnmower, one after 3 weeks and the other a week later to a height of 6cmboth times. It is 5 weeks down now.

I intended to give the grass a cut today (a week since it’s last cut) and after assembling the Bosch AHM38G yesterday evening I was all gung ho to use it today.
The assembly instructions were not the best but I think I put it together properly.

Anyway today I went to use the Bosch on the end bit of the garden which I will eventually turn into a flowerbed so it was a good place to test. However, when I tried to cut the grass it literally tried to pull up the turf nearly so I stopped, adjusted a couple of the settings and no improvement. I then got the Flymo out and cut the grass to 6cmand went at it with the Bosch again and same result, would push a little then face resistance and nearly pull up the turf.
Any ideas what I could be doing wrong. Very frustrating morning.

Have you got the shear bar close to the blade but not to close they need fine tuning, also being that it's new you may have to wear the paint off ;) also them manally push mowers are best with short grass not long grass, mow little and regualy, also grass can get tough

The Bosch says it cuts to a max height of 40mm so 4cm, in fairness I had only cut it to 6cm so 60mm, maybe that is part of the problem.

Im not sure is the shear bar to close to the blade, I’m out at the moment so cannot check and Im not familiar with the type of mower anyway.
I did attach a couple of pics of it but it may not be obvious from them.

Just watch the video, looks like the blade may be catching the shear bar they have to be justed just right to get them to run smothly

When not cutting the grass it didn’t seem to catch it from what I can remember.

It certainly doesn't seem to be running very well, I cant see it cutting any grass in the video.

Those types of mowers are definitely only good at trimming, thick long grass is hard going.

I'd only use one like that if I wanted stripes.

It sounds as if the cylinder might need to be a bit closer to the fixed blade. If you spin the cylinder by hand (carefully, don't cut yourself) you should be able to hear a kind of shushing noise as the rotating blades contact the fixed blade (Not a loud noise - if it's loud it's the opposite problem, too close). You can test that it cuts all the way along the blades with a sheet of paper. It's hard to explain but if you google "how to adjust a cylinder mower" you should find videos that show you how.

Thanks Jenny. I tried the paper test, either I’m doing the test wrong (most likely) or I have done something else with the setup of the mower.

I see frrom some videos on line that there is 2 cog's you have to change, one way for mower then change cogs for sharping, by any chance you have them the wrong way around

I don’t think so as in the cogs were already fitted to the mower.
I will cut the grass shorter with the Flymo next time then will try the manual mower after on a shorter lawn.
