I don't know what the brand names are in UK so I don't know whether the product you're referring to is actually Bacillus thuringiensis. The only way to be sure of getting what you want is to read the tiny print on the packaging where active ingredients are listed. I'd be surprised if BT is classed as non organic because it is NOT a chemical. As I wrote before it's a bacteria that targets caterpillars.

 

Hi @noisette47 I was forgetting that you were outside of the Uk so probably seeing different (or differently named) products. TopBuxus contains BT, which as you say its a natural bacteria, but I’m trying to track down the ingredient list to check what else it includes. I probably need to look in the local big GC and see if they stock it so I can peruse the box as you say. The company website is frustratingly vague.

 

Well I've just spent an interesting few minutes with Google and Amazon UK. Topbuxus originates in Holland. They're cagey about the ingredient because it seems there's doubt about it's approval for use in UK. You can order the brand Solabiol (French and rightly classed as organic) on Amazon UK for delivery to a UK address but the price is eye-watering. So until the UK clarifies it's status (or as is more likely the case, a company pays to have it approved) that explains why it's not widely available!
It's shame because there are so few genuinely natural, effective products for home use. Can't say I've ever had any success with nematodes for anything. Parasitic insects, yes...great against greenfly, whitefly and red spider mite.

 

I have used nematodes for slugs and vine weevil, both with success.

 

I will report back on how we manage this summer.

 

I think rip them out if theyre too much hastle. hedging is cheap

my gran has some boxes that seem immune to the moth... i think these fellows have something to do with it!

 

I use Provado Ultimate Bug killer concentrate. It works. It's quite an old container as I don't use it much. Is it now Provanto? Not sure if the ingredients are the same.
