Morrisons have become the first supermarket to not allow people to shop without a mask unless medically exempt.
I dont go further than 1/4 mile to my local co-op these days and then as seldom as possible. Why risk it? The other night I went in and a youngish lady was at the till paying but not wearing a mask. I asked the staff why this wasnt questioned. They told me they had been instructed not to question anybody for any reason for fear of upsetting the customer. This beggars belief. I had a higher opinion of the co-op than this. Do they not care that they are putting their staff at risk not to mention other shoppers? Shame on them. And all for a sale of a single packet of (obviously essential????) cigarettes and nothing else.

I picked up a specialist order last night from an ethnic deli. Whilst getting the packages together another customer came in without a mask. The shop assistant immediately, and very politely, said "I'm sorry but I'm unable to serve you unless you wear a mask." The customer went to their car and got a mask.

Yet again Morrisons are leading the charge. This is precisely why we shop there.

I like Morrisons. Do bulk of our shop on line but did do a click and collect there which was run very well and much safer than going in store.

Well, it's about time Supermarkets were made to enforce the mask and they have only done so on the instructions of the Government, so it's not a voluntary turn around. Smaller Shops and Chemists handing out prescriptions have been enforcing "no mask, no serve" policies for months. :dunno:

I rang their head office and asked if it was the managers mistake or was it company policy. Did he think it was right to put their staff at risk and didnt they think they had a duty of care to other customers? His reply left me speechless. He said it wasn't their responsibility it was down to the Police to enforce it. They couldn't give a damn. Times like these i wish I used Facebook so i could shame them
Considering they sell the co-op brand as an ethical save the world business i wonder where their morals are. Shame on them. I'll never shop there again
Looks like Sainsbury are going to do it too. Its about time this started happening.

Must admit we haven't been in a Co-op since last March so not sure what the arrangements are inside. Our local one only had staff on the till, so you wouldn't encounter them till you shopped and went to pay. I suppose the Co-op would have to employ extra staff on the door to stop people entering without mask, would that mean extra costs on your shopping bill to pay for it?

Also I read staff at the till get a lot of abuse when they challenge people without a mask. Some people can get aggressive.

I'd rather be a bit more frugal with my shopping than catch a virus that might kill me.

Sainsbury's have also introduced the no mask no service rule. I would hope that the other major supermarkets will follow suit over the next week.

Security guard at the door helps. Ours has one, everyone wears a mask. Because of the guard ? Maybe / maybe not.
No guard at the other shops in town yet everyone wears a mask.

I do think santising your hands before you are allowed in would be a good idea as would steam cleaning the manky baskets.

Our local Netto has one of these at the entrance, along with a mini version for customers' hands. -desinfecter-les-caddies-338537.jpg Everything gets thoroughly sprayed, not relying on a bored employee to swab over the trollies. Seems sensible. No bouncers required on the doors of supermarkets, either. Very few try to enter unmasked and the cashiers soon sort out anyone that does.

Do you think it is, Jiffy. They have enough on their plate dishing out fines to mass parties etc, the Retail Supermarkets, surely, should be responsible for the "No Mask, No Serve" enforcement. If the little Shops can do it, why not the Supermarkets.?:doh:
