I have a problem with my new rooting of the Pink Brugmansia. I can't see critters but I am sure something is eating it as you can see through the brown bits. I sprayed it with washing up liquid but I have lost all six leaves now. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

    My guess would
be the dreaded red spider mite.

People of our age,, need a hand lens to spot them.

I thought you would come on and say that. :rolleyespink: What else can I do ... I don't have any chemicals. Strange my big Charles Grimaldi is okay.

Well if it is RSM, keep it well away from Charlie, they spread from plant to plant very easily.
Brugs are a sucker for them, usually because we have to overwinter in a greenhouse.

You could make sure it is kept humid by spaying it a few times a day, especially under the leaves.
I've been using mite killer that is designed for use in animals hutches:biggrin:, it works if you spray very lightly.

But first you need to make sure that is the problem.

Well, both of us have looked with a magnifying glass (and glasses on :heehee:) and can see no pin point red dots. The mother plant (which resurrected itself after being dead/dormant for years looks fine down on the lower dining patio where Charlie is. I have this one on the front of house patio ... about two meters from the Iochroma. :hate-shocked: Can they recover from RSM, I am down to no leaves on it, just a stem now.

Well it sounds a bit drastic, no leaves al all. RSM are not red, they are a small yellow insect with a couple of black dots
Maybe its not RSM, could it be a soil problem?

It is a new cutting off the mother plant which I rooted in water then planted in fresh compost. It had only developed the six leaves so far. Think I'll add a little alcohol/hydrogen peroxide to my spray and spray the stem.

Here is a picture of RSM I took off the net ... looks red to me.

That is not the kind I get.
It actually looks like the bug you can buy that kills it.

I think its called two spotted red spider mite that I get, its mostly pale yellow with two black spots.
It is often found this time of year on the undersides of the leaves, its only if you get a total infestation that you see lots of webbing and the tiny bugs moving along the webbing.

I put a little Isopropyl Alcohol in my washing up liquid spray as I read you can use it or Hydrogen Peroxide and it said keep the leaves wet to deter them. Went back out and I was wrong there are two leaves left. I shall leave things alone now and see if it recuperates.

            Thanks for the help Pete.

Just to say after losing all leaves to the whatever ailment three weeks ago, it has come back quite nicely ...

Here I am back with this Pink Babe again. It survived and has grown to 65cm tall.
                Pink Brug 12 Feb 23.jpg
I found this on The 'Y' Factor.
Brugmansia cubit: Brugmansia: The "Y" and subequal leaf
It was a side shoot from the mother plant which bloomed last year. I keep wanting to chop it in half ... but will I ruin it? I plan on giving it away to a friend as I have three pink ones, who will hopefully put it in the ground.
                What would you do?

Personally I'd say do you want a multi stemmed bushy shrub or a standard.

I've only taken this idea of a Y as applying to seed grown plants, although when older they often still branch into a Y at each flower, but not always.
I've had cuttings flower at less than a foot tall.
                It looks a bit yellow @Victoria .
