Can I shell Mangetout?

For several reasons (excuses!) - I have let my mangetout go too far. Can I shell them and treat them like traditional peas?

Thanks in advance. This year has been a poor year in the garden. This can be attributed to a hectic schedule and unpredictable weather. Broccoli bolted every time I tried. Cauli didn't do anything. Toms and bell peppers didnt like the changing weather, temps and the fact I wasn't regular at watering them. Dwarf apple tress (3 of them), produced 2 apples. Raspberries died just before ready to pick. And surprisingly I botched up the courgettes - I know, how can you botch up courgettes!!

I still have potatoes in bins, carrots in tubs, spring onions and corn on the cob. So if I can salvage the managetout it would be great.

Wonderful - after I have tidied up the strawberries and mowed the lawn, I will start shelling mangetout for tea tonight.

 

You can also keep the biggest peas, let them dry out and use them to sow next year if they have got to past being Mange Tout size. Being a canny Scot I let 1 plant produce big pods and use the resulting "seed" the following year. Not bought new seed for the last 5 years and no ill effects from using my own. I normally grow around 6 batches of Mange Tout through the season starting the 1st lot in the greenhouse for an early crop and sowed my last batch about 2 weeks ago.They will also be grown in the greenhouse as by the time they will be producing it will be a bit late in the season to get much from them if they were planted outside. The only downside to growing Mange Tout is I think they are revolting if frozen and therefore you sort of have to eat them when they are ready to do so but not exactly a chore we like them both cooked for about a minute or raw in salads.Enjoy your tea
