    Hi there :help:

I was told the other day that carrots grow better with used compost from the previous year.

I have a load of soil left over that I grew potatoes in and was gonna try carrots. Does anyone know if this would work with parsnips too.

Last year I had really long narrow parsnips not much thicker than a ruler width and loads of green tops.

    Thanks

Hi should work fine with the old compost but will needing beefing up with a general fetiliser , the spuds would of had all the goodness.... or left out all winter the rain would of taken it out as well, try and do PH test and then have a look what parsips like then you can add what you want .

The reason they grow better its easy for the root to push its way down no stones and the like , I have done this before but using old metal drums when I had the alotment.

    Hope this helps

I grow my parsnips and carrots in holes filled with a mixture of fine garden soil and old tomato compost. I don't add fertiliser at the initial stage of growth but give an occasional liquid feed once established.

I mix old multi-purpose compost (i.e. "once used" e.g. for Spuds in Bags) 50:50 with sharp horticultural sand and sow Carrots in large-ish pots (12" diameter say)

I also use the old compost to fill "pots" made from rolling a newspaper around a spray can - they are then planted out as soon as the third leaf (i.e. first true leaf) appears.
