I'm almost tempted to keep it going through the winter, but I know that I shouldn't...............

Last week just before the wet weather started I took the step of lying all my cannas down to keep the worst of the rain out of the pots as I want them to start drying out now, ready for overwintering. As they're all still in perfect health and not dying back yet I didn't want to cram them all in the greenhouse so I'm hoping that this will help :)

In many ways this continued mild weather is great but its keeping the Cannas going and like you say by the time they go dormant it'll be time to wake them up again :heehee::snork:

We have a long way to go.
And in a short time we will get there.

I'm drying mine off now, I usually start by pushing over the pots onto their sides so no more rain gets in.
I dont have any in the ground anymore, but if I did, and I didn't have replacements in pots, I'd be lifting them now.

Canna Bengal Tigers, catching the late October sun . I'll be lifting my cannas in the second week of November . They are in a sheltered spot and I like to get my moneys worth!
A question on canna seeds , the Bengal is a Hybrid so the seeds would be infertile or not true to type ? Anyway all my canna seed pods seem to drop off before they split for collection !

Guys , unfortunatly , didn`t have loads of time this summer and still only manage to see my garden on sunday , I will post few pictures asap .
A silly question : can cannas be propagated by stem layers? we will all cutt the stem down and I was wonder if it`s actually possible use it .

From my limited knowledge, I'm pretty sure that monocots cannot be propagated in this way (could be wrong though). Some monocots take from leaf cuttings though (Eucomis are easy from leaf cuttings) so maybe that is the way to go?

I don't like to admit but these were a poor buy, about half were virused the other half were not correctly labelled - the so called "Black Knight" were green for instance. I destroyed them all a few weeks ago much to my shame. I never learn, buy cheap buy twice.

                There lovely cannas @sal73
I would start them now if you have the space. Jungle seeds are selling rhizomes :snork: and suggest starting them in a warm place and don't leave till spring.
