I see you are in Spain 12-12 , I wondered why Kristen said search Ebay Spain ! ( Actually not many Canna semillas on Ebay.es ) I would imagine any Canna will grow in your climate far better than a UK one.
I have not grown an 8ft plus Canna , if Bilbo , Kristen or Armandii and others read the post I am sure they can advise a couple of large types to look out for .:dbgrtmb: I would think your planting and planting out times will be different as well.

Hi 12-12, I have grown Canna altensteinii for a number of years and managed to get it to grow up to 11ft in the UK climate just 8-9 months after sowing the seed. It also quite often flowers in its first year.

I think most Cannas like plenty of moisture and feed when in full growth although they can cope with drier conditions, so if you can provide that then I would imagine the added warmth of a Spanish climate should encourage them to grow really well :dbgrtmb:

I've just given 5 seed a 'scrape' and are now on soak. Dunno if I did it right, I just kept filing until I could see it had broken through the skin, and into the white part. If it doesn't work, I still have 10 more seed to try.

        Cheers...Freddy

Well that all 40 done and in the heated propagater. When I was sowing some of the seed the outer shell was coming away from the seed will this have any detrimental effect in the seeds germinating?

Hi 12/12, yes that is a Canna plant. After the flowers have finished if the plant sets seed they will be in a lightly prickly seed pod, they need to be harvested when the pod begins to dry and the seed inside will be almost black. One thing to note though is that unless it is a species variety it may not come true from seed and may have a different flower.

You can also divide the clump when its dormant and just about to come in to growth, leaving 2-3 shoots per clump, for us in the UK that is usually March time.

Seed though is readily available through Ebay in particular and if the specific directions are followed they really are easy to germinate :dbgrtmb:

The plant to the right has green prickly pods on it. How long roughly should it take until the seeds are going to be ok to collect??

You can leave them until they just start to split open. If you miss the first one, because it splits open, that's OK - the rest will then follow soon afterwards. The pods will probably have changed to a dark red colour by then

I have seen many Cannas in Spain and the Canaries which do not set seed, not all do.
They get to the green seedpod stage and drop.
When ripe, the outer green seed pod will turn brown and the seed inside will be black.

No I don't think that is a Canna seed pod 12/12, it should be round and prickly. Canna seed are black and very hard, but I suppose those could be immature ones?
