I have always planted the Canna rhizomes in buckets and large planters in the warmth of the house . This is not ideal as my office is full off buckets , plus a couple sneaked into a spare bedroom ! My DIL to be says her Cannas left outside ,in the planters I gave them , over winter are sprouting . It has been a very mild winter , but there have been a few days of frost.

:yahoo:I have one canna :hapydancsmil: I'm very excited about it! :hapydancsmil: I've never grown one before! I've got strict instructions to keep it warm until at the earliest the end of May at which point it can be put in the garden :yay:.

@joolz68 spot on :blue thumb: I grow mine in £1 buckets and a few large containers in the house . Planted around the third week in March most are about 3 feet now ! Just moved them out to the GH this weekend , still a few cold nights forecast but they will be OK . @Beckie76 you are right plant them out around 3rd or fourth week of May.

These are 3 C.Tropicana early September.

It's a mixture of 43 and 35ltr and to be honest I'm struggling to carry the 43ltr ones, it's just about manageable when the compost is dry but once soaked they are heavy. So when I repotted them last weekend I tried to use all 35ltr, but I ran out. I got all mine off ebay, it's the cheapest place especially if you can find someone selling secondhand locally.

I just repotted an Olive tree into a lovely 80 litre plastic rattan container . Being very smart I did it on the lawn to keep the patio clean. Then I had to move it back to the patio, not so smart now !- Oh it was very very heavy :thud:

                        I'm back :yay:

I've got a few Cannas on the go from seed collected from a large robust plant I got last year with no label, it's a stunning bright red flower and has very large green leaves. That original plant is also re-shooting.

I also have musifolia, altensteinnii and a few others all shooting away that were just left out in large pots this winter due to lack of space. I tucked them into our laurel hedge for some protection but other than that they've been drenched and frozen but all have 2-3 inch new shoots :)

pulled all the overwintering plants out of the greenhouse so I could fumigate it - looking good, I dont think Ive lost anything this winter:

Cannas are looking good - Ive given all the pots a drench of vine weevil killer as Ive been finding the gubs in some of of the pots. Will split them in a week or so when I get to it.
