Conditions are far from perfect here, but the purple-leaved, orange-flowered one (Wyoming?) has made clumps 12' across and is still going:yikes: It sailed through temps of -17C and a week of snow with just the old leaves protecting the rhizomes. A toughie!

Thats some size!! It looks similar to Australis so i might invest in a wyoming,my largest musafolia was 2ft when i planted it in the ground this spring,im hoping it makes 3ft so it will have a good chance over a bad winter if we have one this yr,i will lay its foliage over it :)

Hi jules, I have much better results with all bulbs, corms, tubers and rhizomes left in the ground over winter rather than potted up. Even on claggy clay, a good thick mulch of anything to hand seems to offer enough protection. Spring is the challenge, though. Once they've started into growth, late frosts or three months of torrential rain tend to set them back:biggrin:

Hi @joolz68 , I just packed up that Cleo for you, hope to get it in the post tomorrow.
If you said you was looking for Wyoming I could have put some of that in there also;)

@noisette47 , I think you have the jump on us over here, I know you get cold winters, but I think you get a faster warm up in spring.
Any Cannas i leave in the ground rarely break the surface before late May/early June, therefore flowering is often very late.

Some springs are OK, @pete.....the last few have been cold, wet and late! The main difference in climate as far as I can see is the strength of the sun when it does appear and a longer growing season into autumn. Hedychiums are a case in point. I never did manage to flower them in UK, even in the conservatory. Here, they flower every year from mid to late August. Back to cannas:)Would you like some Stuttgart?

Well, I must admit that the piece i've packed up does not carry the best of variegation, so if it should not prove to be very good I could sort some out for you next spring.

I have a renewed interest in cannas of late - I have me eye on renovating one of the beds just by the new patio area that would look quite nice with a few different varieties... :)
