Well I remember "Durban" and "Pretoria" coming on the market.

Then at some point I think they started selling "Durban" or it might have been "Pretoria" under the name of "Tropicana"

Then some bright spark started selling Canna seed under the name of Tropicana and the whole naming system seemed to go out the window.

Durban as I have it is, I guess, best described as outrageous/psychadelic......Foliage is pink, red, bronze and dazzling. Orange flowers. Tropicana Black has almost black clean foliage with red flowers here. So totally different.
Pretoria too is dfferent to Tropicana Gold here.
Think you are right Pete...names are prob confused now alas.
Harts cannas seem to be unique in trying to clean up the nomenclature as well as producing virus free stock.

I’ve just ordered some ‘Indica’ mixed (seed) from a well-known auction site. I suppose they could be anything, but the picture looked nice

The seed (16) turned up this morning. I’ve just ran a file across them to expose the inner, and put them in a container with hot water. I’ll leave them overnight and sow tomorrow.

Best thing to scarify the Canna seed , they are known as Indian shot due to them being hard as the hobs of hell !

Freddy , My old dad always used to say "hard as the hobs of hell" . I am not really sure what it means , but it does sound very dramatic .

"Hob is an abbreviation of hobble as in hobbling a horse. i.e Tying two of its legs together so that it can't run away. The "hobs of hell" or the "bonds of hell" are so hard that nobody can break them and escape from "hell". Hell is also an abbreviation of the Greek word haiʹdes or Hades. So, in saying that something is as "hard as the hobs of hell" it means that it is so hard that nothing can break it"

I haven’t grown Cannas for a while, I assume the virus is still prevalent?

I'm giving them up Freddy, I do that kind of thing, but not because of the virus problems, just moving on.
You can still get virus free plants, my way is to buy in leaf, that way it is reasonably obvious.

Still prevalent I understand , touch wood I have never seen it on my stock . Although as it's airborne there is not much you can do to prevent it .
Just half way through potting up my Canna rhizomes , and putting them in a warm room while Mrs H isn't looking ;)
