Oh, sounds like I moved out of London just in time. I used to live in Forest Hill, about 20 doors south of the south circular, and work in Bermondsey, 1/4 mile from the congestion zone. Thank goodness they didn't pick up on emissions in those days.

I thought the thing stuck in the centre of the windscreen was auto lights and wipers. Never seen/noticed a sensor on the rear view mirror before. Could it be an auto dip sensor for your headlights?
Just noticed this week on our new Mazda, there is no temperature gauge. It's just a blue thermometer light when you start off, presume if it gets hot it turns red. Not like the array of gauges you had on say the Cortina Mk1 GT, 4 dials in a row petrol, temp, oil pressure and amps. They looked great but did you ever use/need them?

My first motor was a Vauxhall Viva HB 1200cc.
0 to 60 (if you had the wind behind you) in around 5 minutes. It was very basic but simple to service and work on.
Opening the bonnet, it had more in common with a briggs n stratton lawn mower engine than the cars today.

Dont have auto dipping head lights but the mirror does when headlights are behind.
Nice to have a few gauges though @HarryS , even if they are only there to worry you.

Yeah bet you could walk around under the bonnet in one of those, the engine was that wobbly thing in the middle.

One of our early cars was a Ford Prefect that looked not much better than this but most of the dials worked

and definitely didn't look like this :lunapic 130165696578242 5:

My current car loads of things in a console high up on the windscreen that I haven't the faintest what they do. The dashboard screen has dials on it but they're all produced digitally by computer

Love the old prefect picture.. I thought it had a sun roof but then realised it was a bit of old wood on the top.
I guess that's you in the stripe jacket shiney!
Todays cars are great while they're working. But when those warning lights on the dash start lighting up LOOK OUT!
The dealer will have a wide grin as the car is booked in for diagnostics. Ching ching..

I missed out there, I was always a red dwarf fan.
                  Still love it.
