I have a car with an electronic key. It's one of those that I keep in my pocket all the time and just touch the door handle to unlock and press the starter when I want to drive.

When the car is sitting on the driveway (don't have a garage) and the windows are frozen I usually go out there, start the car, put it on defrost and then go back indoors for a while. If I had the car bluetoothed to a mobile (which I don't possess) I could, apparently, do all that from my phone.

    My questions are:-

Whilst that is happening could someone get into the car and drive it away without them having the key?

Can I lock the car from the outside (by touching the door handle) whilst the engine is running? I suppose I could try that to find out, but have only just thought of it and am sitting here nice and warm with a cuppa. :heehee:

Something that happens occasionally:- I unlock the car, get in and start it and a message pops up saying "No key detected". I ignore it and just drive away with no problem. That message remains until I have turned off the engine. What is going on?

Thanks in advance for your answers. :blue thumb:

Mine don't like it if the key is not in the car, it starts bleeping, but I think if I push the right button it will stop for a while.
I'm assuming you can only drive off without the keys short distance before the engine stops.
But mine is probably not as advanced as yours.

        Hi,

Usually find the best answer comes from the forum hosted by the cars manufacturer where members will likely have already experienced /answered the same question.

They are a great source of info as there is so much hi tech in modern cars its hard to keep up!

Ours is the same..One day we went to our local Store..and suddenly Mr.W said I cannot find the key...so panic a tad and I said well re trace..so we did wandered about spoke with an assistant nothing,,we went back to the car...was still unlocked so looked for the key...no found..I sat in the driving seat and pressed the on switch..it started I said get in and off back home...thinking this is not good if you can drive your car away with no key...dodgy...then I said the key must be within us...found it luckily...Mr.W. silly billy...so ours would only start if the key is within that close amount whatever that is..close anyway...The thing with ours and all its electronics...we stop for a few secs and it turns itself off...annoying...I know it says press this and press that to stop it but it does not seem to obey....defo male these vehicles our is a Nissan Qashqai SUV. but guessing all similar

You may not be able to lock it that way, but if you have a key (manel type key) then you should be able to lock it with the manel key from outside your car, just tryed it on my car and i can lock it, your manel key may be inside one of your fob key, should be some buttons on the side's of the fob but with all these things it may differ from car to car
The manal key will lock the car but i think it is the dead lock, you could start your car, open the drivers window, then get out shut the door lean through the window and push the lock button innside and then you could use the glowble drop for the windows to shut them (if you have it on your car)

I think if some one does drive your car away they can keep going untill they stop the engine then the cycle will have to start again but if they haven't got the fob they wouldn't be able to start it again unless they made a copy of you fob
As will all of this it may differ

also if you are warming up your car and it's unlock and your in the house you wouldn't be insured
