Some bottles are now not so much child proof as people proof. Like Val, I find some of these tops difficult enough without the added complication of arthritis. Bleach bottles drive me mad. Just like Pete, I tend to leave the lids half screwed on so that I can actually get at the stuff, which destroys the whole point of having safety caps in the first place. Are parents really that incapable of putting hazardous substances out of harm's way? My Mum and Dad brought us up in the days when we had all kinds of potentially dangerous gunk around the place (mostly banned now under Elfensafety) which didn't have safety caps. I can honestly say that neither my sister nor I ever felt the urge to wash our dinner down with a pint of creosote or a nice glass of white spirit. I don't remember any other kids coming to grief either.

Maybe we should have the choice of buying things with ordinary or safety caps. Then our OAPs might have a chance of actually using the products they purchase without having to ask for help.
