That's a shame you lost some plants, but a good harvest.

    JWK,
As I mentioned in a previous post, the tip of a pH meter must not be allowed to dry out. On the cap of the Apera is a fill line and here is the fluid that should be added to the cap when the meter is stored.

I forgot to add this picture in the previous post.

Picked and eaten the first ripe Hungarian Hot Wax. It was more like a sweet pepper, had no heat at all. I suppose they get hotter as the season goes on or else I've lost my sense of taste.

        JWK,
I have lots of Hungarian Hot Wax peppers but wasn't sure at what point I should harvest. The peppers are all light green. Do you normally wait for them to change to red?

I waited for mine to turn red because when I grew them a long time ago the green ones were mild. We removed the seeds before cooking which was maybe a mistake, I should have risked a quick taste because the finished dish didn't have the desired kick.

How do you rate your chillies for heat, do you have a Scoville tester?

          JWK,
Ok, i'll wait for them to turn red as I like a bit of heat. I don't have a Scoville meter, in fact I didn't know one existed? If you have any information on a meter then please let me know.

Someone on the TV a while back was saying it's not the seeds that contain most of the heat but the membrane they are attached to.

Not something I've tried because I I don't eat them.

It looks more like a chemical test kit I only found it by googling Scoville test. I won't get one as I also found a cookery video where a lady uses her finger to taste the hotness, very carefully I add! I don't grow the really hot varieties so am happy with a mild heat.

Edit: I must have been dreaming about a home test kit because I can't find one now, well not an affordable one. It looks like the only way is to send samples off to a lab, sorry for the misinformation.

Thanks @pete the next one I will leave the membrane on.

                Eatenbyweasels,

Exactly, I often use supermarket seeds retrieved from fruit. I've not had any failures by doing this. I think the only problem is that sometimes you don't know the exact variety.

                  Pete,
Yes it's true. The Capsacin is mainly in the membrane between the seeds and the outer body of the chili. Its often called the Placenta.

It's the second year I've used this batch of saved seeds. It's not consistent in fruit shape, but they are all compact plants, with lots of tasty, orange fruits, so as I'm not an "anorak" with peppers (as I am with tomatoes), that'll do for me.

I've grown sweet peppers from supermarket fruit and always managed to get some fruit from them.
Often looks pretty much the same as the fruit the seeds came from.

                        Pete,
It's like getting a big packet of seeds with every pepper! I guess the only thing to note is that it will only be guaranteed to germinate if the fruit is ripe. Green peppers are much less viable.

I find that they germinate faster and more reliably than the dried out ones from a packet.
